Hissing Fuel Regulator? - Solved
Old Faithful is giving me a hard time. She just quit running ... no sputter ... just quit. I concentrated on Ignition and replaced some items because my Ignition Module didn't read 400ohms.
Still ... no start. Concentrated on all the grounds ... cleaned them up ... no start. Oddly enough ... with the key in the ON position ... I hear the fuel pump running and a hissing air sound coming out of the fuel regulator on the fuel rail. I looked hard ... no fuel leaks ... and there is gas in the tank. I removed the fuel line from the top of the filter ... and fuel is being pumped out ... at what pressure ... I don't know ... was a low flow for sure ... no gusher. I am at a loss on why the pump is pushing air through the regulator. Any ideas from the experts? Thanks in advance. |
you need to check your fuel pressure. pic is a rig you can make from hardware parts and a cheap oil pressure gage. goes between filter and fuel ring.

can't seem to post a pic???

Thanks so much for the information.
While I am puzzled at the sound of the fuel regulator ... the fact is ... she won't start ... and currently there is no power going to the coil. I have a service manual and am going through the steps to figure it out. Right now my best friend is my ohm meter. ... so far I have replaced my IG Module (didn't read 400 ohms) ... replaced cap and rotor ... replaced coil. Coil, Cap and rotor were pretty cheap .. but the IG Module set me back a bit. Still testing and searching. More to follow. |
Found out why ....
One of the tests of the fuel pump is to: 1. Remove the electrical connector on the oil pressure relay (located on the bottom of the engin on the passenger side) 2. Turn the iginition key to ON and the fuel pump will fire up Apparently this bypasses a safety device in the fuel pump system that allows it to run without the engin turning over. I did this test ... and low a behold ... pump ran ... and hissing sound could be heard from the fuel regulator. That mystery solved ... I move on to why she won't start. |
