Got any simple mistakes?
Every since I changed my oil, my oil pressure has been low. Sometimes when I take turns the pressure would drop to near zero!! Well I remembered that when I changed the oil and put on the new filter...I didn't put any oil in the filter. Well that was like a month ago and I just figured my gauge was messing up. Well I decided to check my fluids today and I noticed my oil was almost a qt low, now when I checked it when I first did my oil change it was fine...then again I didn't start the car or I would have known the oil filter also needed oil in it as it said "4.75qt WITH FILTER" It either slipped my mind or I forgot to put in the fifth qt...I did have an extra qt sitting on my porch...it's the simple mistakes I guess...it does seem alot better now.

Unless the filter has an anti-drainback valve built into it then it really doesnt matter if you prefill it or not. Cause if it doesnt then all that oil you just put in the filter just drained down into the pan. And thats what doesnt spill out when you're trying to screw the filter back on. Fram makes an expensive filter with this feature and most OEM and other filters have it. If the filter doesnt have this then everytime you shut the car off the oil drains back to the pan. So installing a filter dry is just like shutting your car off: no big deal.
I oil the filter seal and then screw it on. Add my oil to the engine then crank it with the ignition disabled til I have pressure. Then I check the oil level and add if necessary. Hook the ignition back up and let her atleast reach operating temperature. Done deal.

I myself am not the biggest fan of fram filters. Here is a link I found about a year ago on oil filters...interesting reading and informative observations. Lots of info on what is and isn't in a good filter.

Pre-fill them. Not because of the increased oil capacity, but because it get's oil to the engine faster on the first start-up.
When the filter element is saturated with oil prior to start-up, it will have no room to absorb any additional oil, and it will flow to the bearings faster.
When the filter element is dry, it has to become saturated before oil begins to pass through it.
It's such a small thing to add to the potential longevity of your motor, it's a small price to pay for peace of mind.

You want a simple yet funny mistake???
Having the Key in the "ON" position so you can listen to the radio in the car while changing the FUEL FILTER....
Nothing quite like a sudden 6 foot high guyser of gasoline shooting directly at your face when you pull the hose off!
Been There
Done That
Rod.
P.S.
I guess that's not as bad as the nameless other "ZDriver" who recently snapped both lower ball joint bolts off in the spindle because they forgot about the "Lefty Loosey, Righty Tighty" Rule!!!!!

How about having the front end of my Fairlane on jack stands while doing about 5 different jobs on the car at one time then turning the key while it is in first gear!!! The car would desel just enough to not stop jumping forward and the brakes for the most part were useless...had to slam it in park after about 30 feet...once I stopped freaking out and noticed it was in gear
My son, a friend of his and myself were swapping out the motor from my parts car! No one thought to pull the battery! Here it comes....
A spark from removing the wire to the alternator, which was done after the gas lines were removed and the car went up in flames. I had my back turned to the car and all i heard was OH **** ! Before i could run back to the car, the friend had doused it in antifreeze and put it out. Now i follow the rule of disconnecting the battery, almost no matter what i am doing. Too bad we didnt have that on video, that would have been funny watching our reacton!
My son just ran in the house. When he came back we were all laughing at him. I asked him why did he run? He said someone had to be there to tell the coroner what happened!

what about getting your hand caught under the hood tension rod thats worse or almost cutting your hand off tring to remove an engine, the bolt on the head wasn't fully tightened and it swung at me, v8 390 thunderbird motor it hurt.
I removed the hood release cable but left the latch installed so when the wind blew the hood shut it was stuck that way
I had to unbolt the front of the hood and squeeze in there as far as I could to get at the bolts that hold the latch in place and unbolt that. If I would;ve been even the slightest bit overweight there would've been no way I could've gotten in there. Luckily I'm thin with long arms or that could've been ugly.
