Fuel pump questions

1980 ZX 2+2 NA
Last fall i replaced the fuel pump and I'm not sure how a correct pump is supposed to work. I have the line pulled off before the filter to see aobut draining the tank (it sat for a few years) and fuel is comming out, a decent amount but it does it in spurts, i have half a mind to try and measure how much each time (maybe when it warms up). So i guess what i'm wondering is should there be a constant stream or is it spurt by spurt and somehow the reg after the filter controls all that? Also has anyone replaced/upgraded thier fuel system? the problem that is keeping my z off the road is fuel gets tot he filter but after that...nothing and getting the effin line and barb system off with out breaking things has become a 2 year task (life stuff keeps getting in my way) but seriously, id like to get her on the road before august so i can put my son in a forward facing seat and take him for a ride!

Fuel drains out because there is 8 feet of fuel line between the front & back of the car. Unless the gas tank is higher than the open end of the line, the fuel will stop after a minute (maybe a gallon will be lost).

it goes in spurts.
The long thin fuel line smooths out the fuel flow a bit and yes, the pressure regulator keeps a steady fuel pressure in the fuel rail.
