egr valve

How can I get my 83 turbo to run without an egr valve? I tried capping the vacuum line but it didn't work. The car will crank and just die so it sounds like a vacuum problem.

lol, did you remover the EGR valve already? you need to block off the port where it once was you know right?

hchase17 Mar 28, 2009 11:35 AM

I was thinking about that but I dont see how that makes a difference besides giving it an exhausgt leak. I was planning on taking the pipe off and plugging it right below the manifold. I don't understand why that would make it not start.

nismo619 Mar 28, 2009 11:48 AM

take off egr you will need to custom fab a steel plate 1/4 inch if you need a templete you can get a cheap gasket from auto zone and use that to trace out the hole you only need the two bolt holes .

unbolt the bottom of the egr tube directly underneath it connects to the down pipe. 1-3/4 inch wrench ? you will need a " female " plug from lowes hard ware

you will need to unplug the " s " tube going down to the down pipe and you will need a male plug to plug that i belive.

Thats all there is to it ,, good luck wear gloves and curse alot its a pain in the rear ened !

because its attatched to the intake manifold!!!!! its a HUGE VACUMME LEAK! you need to seal off any open port you have on the intake manifold both where the EGR solenoid mounted on top of the manifold and where the pipe mounted to under the manifold. did you think those holes didnt go anywhere?

hchase17 Mar 28, 2009 03:49 PM

Seriously I didnt even think about it being on the intake manifold. That was my not paying attention to detail. Thats why I ask the questions cuz its something obvious usually.

snwbrderphat540 Mar 28, 2009 06:26 PM

lol yeah, leaving either of those open holes on the manifold is = to you having absolutely no vacuum anymore.

NismoPick Mar 28, 2009 09:47 PM

^^^ x2... Maybe that's why it doesn't run right? :D

hchase17 Mar 30, 2009 02:25 PM

lol yeah i overlook the obvious things usually which doesn't help

NismoPick Mar 30, 2009 04:20 PM

So... now that you've discovered the prob and either capped the egr port or reinstalled the egr, does the car run better?

hchase17 Mar 30, 2009 08:30 PM

i havent gotten around to it yet lol...i jus have to cut the peice to cap it and im sure she'll do fine...jus found a scrap peice of metal at work that I have to cut out and drill the holes in to fit exactly where the egr was.

I'm gonna jump in here and ask a question to. Would any extra work need to be done to just install a non egr intake manifold onto the turbo engine?
