doing your own brakes
 

Is this something a novice like myself can do? I'm not a mechanic, but I think i can do it, but is there anything i should worry about that i might not be able to do?

If it's something as changing pads then yeah...but read up on it first as in have a service manual for the car. That always help, if you haven't done a job like this before. If you have any other questions, don't be afriad to ask. :D
