Does anybody know how to identify trannys by the serial number stamped on the case?

Does anybody know how to identify trannys by the serial number stamped on the case?

There were only two trannys used in the ZX, the T-5 in the turbos and the not T-5 in the NA. I forget the number on the NA.

Actually, there were 6 different tranny's used in the 280ZX alone, not counting the SIX additional NISMO Factory Competition transmissions.

The automatic - same for all years - '79 to '83
The T5 - same for all years - '82 & '83
'79 4-speed (same as the '77/'78 4-speed)
'79 5-speed (same as the '77/'78 5-speed)
'80 5-speed
'81 to '83 N/A 5-speed

The only one with "well known" markings are the T5's although the casing for the '79 5-speed is visually different than the '81 to '83 N/A 5-speed.
