Couple of Qs, VIN Decode & Retitle
Couple of Qs, VIN Decode & Retitle
I was hoping that one of you generous souls would be able to decode my VIN for me. I've been scouring the internet and searching a few forums for at least an hour now with little success. I have a 1979 coupe VIN# HS130-140588.
Also I seem to remember that there were a few early ZXs made without the catalytic converter. Is there any way of knowing if mine has it or not before I get it up on a lift?
I got (free) this car out of state without a title and I was assured that it wouldn't be a problem to get it retitled here. Now I'm hearing that I need to contact the previous owner and have him apply for a replacement title before I can have it transfered into my name. Does anyone know an alternate method of retitling the car?
Thanks.

that's BS man. what state are you trying to get it titled in...? I would tell them your uncle left it to you when he died, and no one knows where the title is..
It will be harder than that to get a title. You can't just claim a car because it is parked in your yard.
If you know the guy and know where he lives or have his number then you'll probably be ok. If you dont' know the previous owner's name then you're screwed! PARTS CAR!
In the owner's state, get or have him get a 'Lost Title Transfer' form. Have him, as the legal owner, fill it out (real basic info) or you can fill it out for him and mail it to him to sign. Then bring that to your DOL. That's all they need. Maybe a hand written receipt of gift from him as well signed and dated. The DOl doesn't like gift cars and you can't gift a car twice. (if the Z was given to him, he has to sell it) But he can put on the receipt that it does not run, sold for $100. and you'll only pay sales tax on 100 if your state even has sales tax.

Well I'm starting to think about taking my life savings and heading south to buy another zx in better condition. I figure that this move will get me, less of a headache, a car that's already titled, a car that requires less work which directly translates into cheaper in the long run. I would part out my car and send the rest to the scrapper, a horrid thought I know... but I'm having my doubts about this thing. I want to get it titled and registered so that I can drive it to the shop and get it up on a lift so I can see what's really going on under there, but until I do that I havn't the foggiest idea what to do.
