Building some exhaust
Ok Ive gotten bored cuz I have nothing to really fix so I started with the exhaust, Ive gutted that cat and that didnt change much but with the cat off its so much faster @.@ downside it HURTS to drive cuz of how loud it is!!! So Im going to place a Cherry bomb there and remove the muffler. Then depending on how loud it is (I REALLY dont want a ricer sound but I dont wanna go deaf either)
Good Idea bad Idea? Suggestions? Yes Im trying to be cheap lol ATM it sounds like a 454 V8 On crack @.@ |
i did the same to mine. i hate it. but i used a purple hornie. i got rid of it and am waiting to buy a new exhaust. Full header back. Just gotta get some money together.
Ah Well either way ATM I have a gutted out cat that now Damaged do to rust so theres a big hole in it So Im going to stick either a pipe there or a cherry bomb, probably a pipe first then mess with the muffler.
Are you saying you just gutted the cat, left the muffler on and it is deafening? I would think it might a louder but, with the muffler on it would still be bearable or I could be misunderstanding. I plan on doing this as well (gutting the cat and leaving on the muffler) I just wanna make sure it is bearable.
OH no! I took the cat OFF and it was deafening @.@ With the cat on it has a nice tone to it (i also have a small leak somewhere sooo ya) The major diff is the boost of power, hence why I want a new muffler as well, more free flowing
i have header, cat delete, and a magnaflow muff... its pretty quiet untill i actually get on it
Nice, well I get paid today and Im not sure what I wanna do. But either way I have to fix that exhaust leak but id rather not have to cut on the down pipe But is seems I have no choice. Welding under there is soooooo gonna suck... Then again. I could try to make slip joints and just RTV the hell out of the joints.
*cough cough* I got it sound awesome! *cough* now to figure out why it seems like its venting RIGHT into the cab!!!!
How far out does the tail tip has to stick out from under the car? |
When you say cherry bomb, do you mean glasspacks or an actual muffler? just curious because im thinking about putting glasspacks on my 280, when I get it.
Glasspacks, sorry ANd so far just a then stock 2inch exhaust and the stock muffler sound pretty good
sweet.
Very lol Tho I may try a cherry bomb glass pack in place of the muffler. I just need to get a REAL welder first, the $160 Checker auto ones SUCK!!!!!!
thats what im gonna do. it has a busted glasspack and a cat delete already, but im gonna switch it with cherry bomb. i wish i had a welder:mad:. oh well. i wanna hear it when you get it put on.
The welder is has makes welds that hold, but dont look nice at all. And sure! But It will have to wait till next payday lol
thats cool. i gotta get the cat off of mine. its got holes in it.
Fun!, I gutted mine and had to drill out the old bolts then when I had to put new gaskets on it the new bolts got so badly stuck I just cut it off and gave up on it
Gutting a cat doesn't do much in the way of performance... it can actually hinder performance over stock. Test pipes FTW! :D

No but it made it sounds pretty cool lol
And Thats exactly what I wanted to do but I didnt know where I could get new flanges and I didnt have the tools to cut them off of the cat itself so I cut the pipes and made slip fit ones. Eventually I want to get an entire system but no one seems to make them for THAT year of the 2+2... |
You can get flanges @ any exhaust shop. I got mine from Midas for like $2 each. You can cut exhaust pipes w/ a sawsall, chop saw, grinder, torch, or even a hack saw.
Exhaust pipes are easy. that 1/2" thick steel on both sides of the flange was another story
How hard to you think it would to build your own exhaust system? |
Depends on how good you are...
With the right tools it's easy. Just buy some mandrel bends online, some straight pipe & hangers from an exhaust shop, and go to town. |
IT doesnt seem too hard, And I think I could build one for much cheaper then I could buy a kit
Does putting the straight pipe in place of the cat help on performance quite a bit or is it more for sound?
I noticed a big jump just from gutting my cat but that cat was also next to clogged the straight pipe was even better, now its just the stock muffler that restrictive
i just figured out my master plan exhaust setup...... it's a secret though. gotta wait.
