blower exchange
I have a 1982 2+2 that is in excellent shape. Everything is working but the fan doesn't seem to be blowing much air. I am sure this is pretty common since my 1979 zx does the same thing.
Is there a different blower that can be used to increase the volume of air for the A/C fan? My air is ice cold but very little is coming out of the vents. I have taken the system apart and re-installed new foam at the joints but even on the highest setting the air coming out of the center vent is nomial at best. I am just curious if a newer blower will match up with the existing system. Thanks |
Do all the dashboard vent ports work? Like when you adjust the vent settings, the different flaps open & close via vacuum? All the 280zx blowers are the same, but there are 2 different controllers... the manual "potentiometer" dial, and the auto climate control option.

Yeah I thought I was having a blower funcionality issue back when I bought my Z. Turns out some of the ducting was missing :)

i have a bunch of the under the dash A/C stuff that i dont need, the blower worked good (blew dust into my eyes)
|
i got air from floor on mine. but nothin on Vents. Does the under dask Vaccume switch have somthing to do with this? Cause it's missin on mine. some one snatched it.

make sure the vacuum lines are hooked up and in good shape to the climate controls. If not then all's you'll get is air to your feet.
|
i can't even find the vaccume lines that go to the driver side "Lift To Open" switch. I had to install a switch. but where do the lines hook up? And yes. this car has the Auto air bs.

it has the hole for it. But that could explain why i can't fidn the lines. But still no air out the dash vents.

The most common vacuum line that needs replacing often is the one that runs through the firewall on the passenger's side. This is because it's closest to the engine and absorbs much more heat and cold than the others (expansion and shrinkage). So, that's the very first one I'd check.
I know that some people have installed blower motors from other non-Nissan vehicles, but I can't recall which ones they used - wish I could now, cuz that's a conversion I'm wanting to do. Frankly, I think the 280ZX blower motor is horrible - much lower output than what it should produce. |
Ewww! I hate shrinkage... ;)
You can use the blower from a 1st gen 300zx in the 280zx as well. Direct bolt-on and it's supposed to have a higher flow rate. |
Hmmm, when the blower motor in my Z31 went bad, I had an extra 280ZX blower, but they were completely different, and not a direct bolt-in. Have you actually used a Z31 blower motor in a 280ZX?
|
No I haven't done it personally. I'll ask Tim and see what he had to change if anything to make it fit.
|
Cool, thanks for finding out about that, LWW. I know the Z31 blower is a heck of a lot better than the 280ZX blower.
