Auto Trannies

I am looking into buying a 280zx. I have been doing research and asking tons of questions. I went by a local Zcar shop in GA and i ask some of the guys questions. The 280zx i am looking at has an auto tranny. They told me that the nissian auto trannies (for the all Z cars) are really bad. I have been looking around on the net and haven't seen anything that confirmed their statement. The reason I want an auto tranny is that I want to make a daily driver (ATL traffic blows ***, it would make insanly bad with a stick.). If i wanted a fun car i would get a stick.

So does anyone have any problems with auto trannies???

Thanks for the help guys.

Nope. Just make sure you have a full service done on the tranny before you start relying on it in hot ATL traffic jams. Obviously, a low mileage Z would be preferable, but as long as the tranny was properly maintained, it should give you good service. You might want to calculate the cost of a tranny rebuild into your purchase price just to cover your bases.

Last thing you want is to loose your tranny in rush hour!

I have had good luck with mine so far. Also I have two good spares if you ever need one It's a 3hr drive for me to go all the way into ATL. Most people swap out there auto trannys because they are slower than 5 speeds so they are a dime a dozen.

they may not be as fast.. but they are equivalent to a 4 speed and if you go here
http://www.geocities.com/z_design_studio/
and enter these numbers
1st : 2.458
2nd : 1.458
3rd : 1.000

Tires : 205/70/R14
Diff : 81-83 Turbo Auto R200 3.545
Redline 6400

you get an approximate 136 mph on Stock parts.. thats without increased boost, here and there mods, cold air intake etc. etc.
oh and also, just to note.. i dont believe this calculator is capable of comensating for forced induction through turbo or supercharger.. so, i would imagine thats with standard numbers as if it was N/A..

I think 140 plus is good enough for me.

for now..........
