'83 2+2 motor swap to '80 coupe

Found a nearly perfect rust free 1980 coupe for a good price, motor has over 184K and cranks but doesn't start, no problem though because I found a 83 2+2 one owner with good service history and 83K miles and runs like a champ but the body is pretty bad so I'm using the motor from it.

What do I need to know to swap these out electronics wise? Done several SBC swaps in the past so motor swapping isn't a big deal, however I do believe that I will need to salvage the ECM and some other electronics correct?

Also can I swap all the goodies off the 83 like lockset, the 80 has diff key for the ignition, doors, hatch, and gas! Also is the dash swapable, I kinda like the dash from the '83!

Anyhow I'm a new Z owner and stoked about putting this little gem back on the road this summer. I would also like to swap out the brakes since the 83 seem a bit heavier duty.

Any and all advice is welcomed, even if some of my ideas are cattywampus I'll be glad to take the critisizm!

BTW I'll have some parts available from the 83 and a complete set of rims off a 1980 if anyone is in need.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to ZDriver!

Virtually everything is swappable on all the 280zx's, minus the body / interior parts of different sizes between the 2seater & 2+2 (doors, roof, hatch).

The '80 motor might have a coolant sensor instead of a cylinder head temp sensor, that's about the only diff. I would just yank the motor w/ the EFI harness still attached, and shove it in the other car.

I was hoping it would be that easy and thanks for the reply!

I was thinkin bout redoin the clutch on the 80's 5 speed before dumping in the other motor, will the EFI get pissy since it won't have an automatic attached to it anymore?

BTW I'll be glad to pull whatever other parts anyone might need or want from the '83 2+2 for next to nothing.

I may be new here but you can find me by the same name on other forums like suzukihayabusa.org hayabusa.org extremebusa.com slickdeals.net and eBay as well.

I hope to get started this weekend and pull the motor out of the '83 and it has to go soon, so if you need parts lemme know

Thanks again

Just remember that the radiator in the 2+2's cools the fuel, before it enters the motor, the coolant tank is in the left side frame rail, these cars have no coolant radiator...

83 280zx 2+2 parts

WARESDOG...

I have an 83 2+2 as well, but lost the left headlight last week.

The simple I will just swap both lights out and have fresh
headlights was my primary thought. But allas the problem
has mushroomed into "the Light Switch Asm switch went
south and compounding the problem "the light switch cable
connector has heat damage. Soo what do the lights do:
on low beam "the left headlamp is dim-the right is bright,
on high beam "the left headlamp goes out whille the right lamp
goes to highbeam.

If you are parting out you 83 2+2, I woulld appreciate having
the opportunity to buy the followng items:
1) wiper and light-switch assembly and cale assembly
2) windshield washer tank-pump assemblly,
3) the radiator overflow tank and bracket
4) the fuel pump if working and in good shape
5) rear wheel hubs
6) the flat panels below the dash if blue and in good shape

No problem, just started today, tore the entire front end off.

Interior is red so no panels but I'm stripping the interior tomorrow.
I can get you the wiper and llight switch
I need the washer and tank
Radiator overflow and tank & bracket I think I can spare
Keeping the fuel pump in case but if the other works I'll let it go
I can't get the rear wheel hubs until I get it on the traler but you can have those as well.

I'll have T-tops, window motors/glass/switches
door mirrors
rear glass plus hatch
rear lights
side markers
center console

warezdog spare parts for 280zx 2+2

Warezdog...

On the Light Switch Asm... my 2+2 has crusie control as part of
the Light-Switch. The Z you are parting-out, does it have Crusie
control. The reason I ask is "there are 3-cables connecting to the
back of the lightswitch on my Z." I do need this Cable Assembly
which attaches to the Light-Switch. There is large Connector on
the other end of the Light-Switch cable assembly.

My Light-Switch cable has had thermal damage, which affects the
Left Headlamp...that's why I need the 3-cable assembly.

For shipping costs, my ZIP Code is 54935
Fond du Lac, Wis.

You may send me a PM for Parts and Shipping Costs $xxxx.
