You don't say AT or 5-speed. Check out car-part.com for starters. Enter your data and sort search results by distance from your zip. That will give you the price ranges for used trannys avail. Maybe you can drive there to check it out, pick it up. Warranties negotiable. Anyway, good place to start so you can compare prices. After that, there's this site - and the rest of the internet.

I see about a dozen used, $350 and less. If you search for compatible years ( there must be some, right?) you could come up with a good number to choose from. Rebuilding is another basic option if you are good mechanically or have a connection. A shop that rebuilds transmissions would probably know where to get a rebuild kit. Let us know what you do finally. Thanks

I can't give you a lot of experience with failed 5-speeds. The two trannies I know of didn't 'freeze up.' You could still get them into one or two gears so you could drive them off the road.

In one case, somebody popping the clutch took a tooth or something off one of the gears and the loose piece was knocking around inside the housing for a couple of months. You could hear it inside there as you drove. One day, it got to just the right spot, jammed the drive which left its normal position with a bang. Put a hole in the housing.

The other one was an old Toyota where the owner's son took it out for a spin and blew the tranny up. It still worked in 2nd gear so he got it off the road and home. $1800.

When auto trannies go, it's usually the belts that loosen up and slip off, I believe. You can make that happen sooner with hard driving and poor maintenance. 5-speeds really are more durable over time - but they like to be treated well and consistently. I have seen 5-speeds that work perfectly, the owner sells the car and the buyer blows the tranny up in under a week. Different shifting styles can stress a tranny to an early death.

If you are really hard on clutch and tranny, get a heavy duty replacement clutch. Could last you longer. I put 240k miles on my orig 300ZXna before the tranny went. Standard OEM clutches were fine because I didn't beat up them, lasted 70-80k miles.

Well you first one is what happened to me. I was spinning my tires in the rain in first. And then i hurd a loud bang and my back tires locked up, i came to a sliding stop. The trans would go in gear. So teyed to take off again nothing wouldnt move. I even reved it up to 3000 rpms trying to take off nothing. So i got pissed reved it up to 5000 and dumped the clutch. It took off after that. I tryed to shift and it grinds with the chutch pushed in and every thing the car has to be at a dead stop before i can put it in gear. And it will go in all the gears. But when i take off and drive its like im driving wile holding the breaks and the trany sounds like its bout to explode. And when i drove it home it tryed to lock up on me a few more times.

Yeah, rebuild is the word now. Check for any leaks before you remove and disassemble - and replace all the gaskets anyway. Might just do the clutch at the same time. Keep us updated here - with photos of your rebuild if you can. Thanks

Ok so i took my trany apart and found the counter shaft end barring was what locked up. The gear cluster after i took it out spins smoth as glass. I would add pics of it but i cant figure out how using my phone. But its the little baring under the plate in the bell housing . Ill keep trying with the pics.
