280zxt climate control blower issue

note: i've had vacuum trouble with this climate control, it's always blown hot, i've been postponing fixing that because i hate pulling the dashboard. this is not a vacuum problem! i've always had vacuum problems but the blower USED to work.

my blower won't run. used to run. now, not. checked the fuses (panel fuses, and also the dedicated blower fuse). no problems with the fuses. i plugged the blower directly into the battery and it ran like hell. what i'm not getting is volts at the output side of the blower relay. i can get the blower relay to click on by putting the control in the "DEF" position.

i've swapped the blower amplifier with one from another car. no change.

it looks like i'd have to take the dashboard out to get to the rheostat amp.

anybody got any better ideas, including dispositive test points?

The first thing I would recommend is to pull the dash, and all the ducting and clean everything, Then replace all the vacuum tubing. I've looked at tubing and thought this is good still no reason to change, a week later something stops. I reinspect the tube and it has cracked in half. My not fix the current problem, but will prevent future ones.

mibh, Misery loves company, I have a junkyard find 82 280ZXT with the same symptom, I know the dash will have to come out like evandubya is saying for reliability reasons, however if you are not ready to take the dive yet, here is a suggestion. I know by now you have downloaded the Factory Service Manual, in the HA pdf starting on HA-64 there are some tests you can do with a Volt-OHM tester that can maybe put you on an electrical failure. On HA-66 there is a diagram for the Program Switch. I have read that if this goes bad, you loose blower control. If the switch is bad, I think you are heading for a dash pull anyway, it just gives you more reason to dive in...

Try changing out the blower motor relay and see if that fixes your problem. The relay is really easy to get to. It's on the bottom of the blower under the passenger side foot well. Two 10mm bolts or screws if I remember it right. If it's always blowing hot, try inspecting the heater control valve. I don't think the part is available from Nissan anymore, but there is a vendor who rebuilds them somewhere in Washington.

Pulling the dash is actually pretty simple. It seems complicated but it's not at all. I don't think it's unreasonable to be able to pull the dash in half an hour....
