280ZX 5 spd stick shift travel

Hello again,

I removed the 5 spd transmission and had a shop replace seals. It was rebuild 5 years ago and had leaks from day one. After re-instaling the transmision, the stick shift doesn't travel as far aft (2nd, 4th, and reverse gears) as it use to. Yes, my arm remembers exactly where it use to be! The gears engage but don't take much pressure on the stick to pop out of gear. It feels like the stick needs to travel aft just another inch or so to engage the gears properly.

The mechanic did not replace any gears or anything, he ony repalced the gaskets and applied seals (he did a good job as the leaks are gone). Is there somehing he could have missed or turned around? I really don't want to have to remove the tranny again. There is a 17mm bolt (with spring) near the aft neck of the tranny and a reverse check sleeve I am hoping may have installed backwards but I don't want to create more problems.

Any suggestions? As always thanks for the time and help!!
Sgonzo

Moved to 280ZX S130 section....

Have you checked the gear oil level?

DO NOT EVER TOUCH THAT 17MM BOLT!!!!

If you remove the bolt, and move the shifter... you will make your transmission utterly useless. And if you over tighten the 17mm bolt, which is very very easy to do, you will break off the protrusion it screws into. That is what happened to the transmission I bought for my Z last week. DO NOT mess with that bolt, or the little pin in front of it.

Bad juju.

did you replace the shifter bushings on the stick itself? thatll take up some slack and make it nice to shift. they wear out very often as they are plastic. or you can upgrade to dodge door hinge brass bushings

Wow! that is freakin awesome!

I think I might try to find one of those old shifters. Though, from what I understand, it mentioned that if a hole were drilled to allow those bushings in, it would be even better with the one from the ZX, I think. Interesting...

it is, I have a 72 240Z shifter with that mod and I enjoy it alot. my old shifters bushings actually broke and fell out and it had TONS of slop. I need to cut down the 72 shifter tho as it feels a bit to tall.

Great tips,
How about the reverse check sleeve (small rectangular diamond shaped cover)... could it have been installed incorrectly? Can I remove it without creating more problems? The plastic bushings are good and the oil level is proper.
thanks!

If I remember right they can only go in one way due to the spring. but you can pull the pin out of the shifter and pull the entire shifter out to make sure its ok.

im telling you, DO NOT move that. I moved mine, it came off the track, I forget exactly what its called but you have to go into the transmission to correct it. dont do it.

You have the T5 trans, not the older Nissan Trans. They dont use the same shifter, but you can get a short throw shifter from a 5.0 mustang and put it into your T5
