280z - 80's 300z - or 90's 300z?

I have always been a z fan. However, I am unsure of which model to purchase. I like the 1990-1996 300z, but if I choose to go that route, will not have enough saved up until maybe the Fall, and will miss the summer. I have driven a 90's version non-turbo 300z and liked it, but actually didn't think it was as quick off the line as I expected. My least favorite body style is the 80's 300z - but there are many of those around - my father used to own a 1981 280z turbo automatic - but he never let me drive it. There are some of those around, but I wonder how quick an inline six is compared to a v-6, although I have heard that the 280z were lighter and hence quicker than the 80's 300z. I also live in the Northeast and worry that if I find a rust free or almost rust free 280z, that even if I store it in the winter, that once the 280z hits the northeast, rust will come. I am a 40 year old guy, I'm not looking for the quickest car on the street, but want something to drive in the summer, especially on the weekends, that gives me a thrill. (I would be buying a manual).

All comments appreciated!

If you get a 90+ (Maintenance can be expensive) especially if you get a Turbo one.

The 80's 300ZX are cool and not as exspensive to maintain however some parts are not readily available for it.

Well, the older 240-280Z's are more prone to rust than the other models, the 280ZX is prone to rust in the rear wheel well and hatch area from my experience. The 280ZX turbos are not too bad acceleration wise, bone stock my ZXT went 15.3@89. (this is with an a/t) I think the non turbo 90's 300ZX's are in the same range, but with a turbo you get more bang per buck on modifications.

I've owned a z-31T and I still have a '83ZX n/a. I love(d) them both but the z-31 was a money pit and I had to sell it (even though it was a 50th anniversary eddition...). I love the '83ZX because it's MUCH easier to work on and even though the parts might not be to easy to come by, the satisfaction I get out of doing the work myself is priceless.
