I Had to because i was doing the swap on my '81. The top of the spindle where it met the distributor is different from the one on an 82 or 83.

stuck in limp mode. FOREVER

About 6 weeks about I began my z31 swap into my 81 280zx and have yet to get it out of limp mode. Ive test the MAF, tps, vacume leaks and im pretty sure all the other limp mode causes. My friend recently brought it to my attention that it could be the the transmission that was causing it to go into limp mode (he had asimilar problem with a swap in his jeep because the gear ratio was off). So my question since the 81 has a 3 speed automatic and the z31 ecu is for a 4 speed automatic, would this be a factor as to why its in limp mode?

I'm running out of things it could be and I'm getting desperate. Anything helps.

Merged w/ previous thread so we don't play the guessing game of what's already been checked...

Did the car have any problems before the ecu swap? And as I re-read this thread... it seems that you've made quite a few mistakes along the way, then later correct them (oil pump shaft, coil wired backwards, incorrect testing, maf wiring?, drop resistor bypass?).

At this point, you might want to revert back to the stock 280zxt ecu and start over. It's either a wiring problem, ecu problem, or firing problem.

Have you read the spark plugs and compared the tips? Maybe one cylinder isn't firing?

Oh yeah sorry about that..

And the car ran pretty great before the swap, the only thing was a slight miss when it was idling. And yeah I hear what youre saying on all the mistakes, but everything seems to be in order with all the wiring but maybestarting over will do it for me. Just my luck.

Yes the 82-83 has a splined shaft to take slop out of the distributor. You would only be changing the oil pump drive shaft if you are also changing to a 280ZX 82-83 turbo dizzy. The only part of the Z31 dizzy you are using in the optical encoder wheel.
