wut would be the best turbo for a 78 280z
 

Hey guys im luis from SD california and about 5 months ago my pops bought me my 78 280z. everything i perfect about it but i was just day dreaming on school the other day about how bad ass i'd be if i came to school with my Z and it made that sick wistleing turbo noise.

My dad and i have thought about it and desided i'd be a great idea to install one on my Z but from wut car should i get it from?

I assume your dad knows how to do a lot of custom work. this isn't a Civic with all kinds of aftermarket support.

Forced induction requires more fuel and a computer to manage it all. As for the 280Z, Nissan made a 280ZX turbo with the same inline 6-cyl engine and a turbo already on it. Swap that engine and electroincs into your car and then you can go from there. You'll have the proper intake system, exhaust manifold, fuel rail and computer. (this has been done many times before)

Without all that, you should run a small turbo as you won't have enough fuel to keep the mixture from going lean at boost. A T3 would be more than enough. You might as well build the engine normally aspired though. You'll get the same power and much more reliably than a hack job turbo.

Look into the 280ZX turbo engine swap. If that's too complicated then you probably don't know what you're getting into by trying to put a turbo on any car. :( Ask your dad what he had in mind too. I'm not sure on the skill level of you two...

maybe i should just get a 300zx v6 turbo engine. instead and put it on my hood. hehe thal be mutch easyer don't u think? and yeah mu pops knows loads about cars but when it come to new imports and new parts like the turbo he gets lost. he had so many muscle cars like a charger, roadrunner, 428 boss, and a fire bird . but hes gettng familiar with import since i just got mine.

That's a good engine, and sets the weight back further but no... it will not be easier.

You've got an L28 engine which is an inline six. You know that. The 280zx turbo is an L28ET. It is also an inline six with the same design. That turbo engine will set right down on your existing engine mounts and bolt up to your existing transmission. it doesn't drop in any easier than that.

Internally it does have different pistons, rings, cam, oil pump, and other little things. If you still want to keep your 280Z, look into the turbo swap. Its actually cheap compared to what you were thinking of doing. You can buy the whole turbo parts car if you look long enough and live in the right areas. $400-900 for a car in ok shape with a usable or rebuildable engine.
