Junkyard turbos are your best bet - If you're bent on a Volvo turbo (it should work), you can find one at a european-only junkyard or parts place, but expect a pretty penny for one. If it were me, I'd find a wrecked DSM (Eclipse/Talon/Laser) and pull the turbo off it, or find a Mustang SVO or TurboCoupe Thunderbird and use that turbo. The DSMs have T28s, internal wastegate; and the SVO cars run T3s, not sure about the gate. You could also use small diesel turbos as well, although they are tuned more for high pressures than spool-up (larger turbine trim and housing). Great for flow, not so much performance though.

Or just find a turbo Z engine and drop that in ...

Hope this helps,
Dave

Figure out the manifold first. If you are using a stock one, figure out what turbo's will bolt to it. If you are having a custom one made, then figure out where the turbo will sit, and if you have room for a wastegate, or will it have to be internal. That will tell you what turbo you can use.

Well, have fun!

Oh, have you done a search in the 280zx section and read up on the old posts about turboing a non-turbo engine?

Well, when you go to the junk yard bring the manifold with you and see what will or will not work, and check to see if it is oil or water cooled. That is also a big deal. And after you get that sorted out then figure out engine management. Then figure out your plumbing, intercooler and exhaust. Then take the car and find a really good tuner and have it tuned to run on the safe side, low boost, then after that you can slowly turn the boost up, having it re-tuned everytime you up the boost. Oh and get ready to pull the motor.
