tripples vs. efi

so here is my question. i have a set of tripples that need rebuild, and on my car is stock efi. i feel my current efi is not up to the task of keeping up with my engines requirements. here is my engines setup. 10.8:1cr, p79 head, 2.5" exhaust, .5" lift 265 dur. cam. msd ignition, should i swap to the webers?

NismoPick Oct 12, 2009 11:08 AM

Well, Ed did it ( https://www.zdriver.com/forums/showt...ghlight=triple )

But as L-Dub said:

However, there's a reason I have triples on my white 240z... They look and sound freakin' awesome and they're retro-cool to the extreme! :icon_super: As long as you're comfortable with the relatively poor fuel economy and tuning issues, they're great for the "ambiance".

If I want to go for maximum hp, I'd go with FI... Oh, wait, that's what I'm doing in my orange 240z... ITB's w/ MegaSquirt... :paranoid:

IIRC you can't run power brakes with triple webers.

skib Oct 12, 2009 12:34 PM

since you already have them Id run them,
but if you where going to buy tripples vs. an ECU Id have to go with an ECU, your tuning will be perfectly accurate and efficant... and you dont have to retune an ECU like carbs.

Personally Id go bother RTz about finding a nice Wolf set up and sell the tripples (thats what Ill be doing)

SHADY280 Oct 12, 2009 12:40 PM

yeah i got the tripples for 300 bux!! some guy was selling a car for 800 and i org. offered 200 for them, but he wouldnt play game, but at 300 he even took them off and shipped them from 100 mile house. i dont have cash for mega squirt, and this dumb stock manifold is a poor flowing paper weight, all be it i have a 60mm tb. heck if i dont like it ill just take them back off and wait to put them on the race car. id love mega squirt, and i kinda bought the carbs as an investment for a intake mani and megasquirt. plus my stock fuel rail leaks as well. ive been reading lots at hybridz about tripples, they are very tunable, and i know some ppl that ave them tuned perfectly, and i will get them dynoe'd just to make sure, and so i can finally post some hp numbers

skib Oct 12, 2009 12:44 PM

since your on a budget and already have them Id just rebuild the tripples

PurePontiacKid Oct 12, 2009 12:58 PM

Kinda off topic, but how does your car run with the big cam and the stock EFI? I've heard lots of people say that you can't run that much cam and still use the EFI... I'm hoping that's not the case so I can build my motor and break it in on the stock EFI.

On topic: I would just get the triples rebuilt, but make sure they're rebuilt properly (when you rebuild them or have someone rebuild them).

SHADY280 Oct 12, 2009 01:11 PM

the cars efi doesnt handle the cam well, hence im pondering tripples. to compensate ive hogged the stock rail, raised the fuel pressure and played with the afm. its quick, just ask nismopick, but i know my mechanical part of my motor has more to offer. i can keep up with mustang gt's, but i feel i can beat them. a friend of mine with an identicle motor setup and tripples in a 240z (i know lighter car) does 13.4 seconds in the 1/4, not too shabby

SHADY280 Oct 12, 2009 01:12 PM

i forgot, i also have a set of dual round top su's, but i dont feel those have enough for my needs. easier carbs, but i dont know their potential

cam is useless with stock EFI

stock EFI anything from 1985 and down is useless...

:082: pretty much, the ECU is equal to a graphing calculator

SHADY280 Oct 12, 2009 05:47 PM

my graphing calc has more than an early z31! im gonna do a write up as well to add to our how to section. might as well as others prolly want to know.

BlueKitsune Oct 12, 2009 06:09 PM

I'm gonna try playing around with carbs for a bit. tho Idk if Im gonna lose a lot of HP or not for using an L24

hoov100 Oct 12, 2009 06:38 PM

deck the block, get some domed pistons, bump the C/R to 13:1 with 36* of timing and call it a day!

Not what I asked ;)

Thanks Shady, I just want to break the motor in on the stock EFI (that way I don't have to screw around with Megasquirt and end up wiping out a cam lobe)

duowing Oct 12, 2009 10:31 PM

As far as the intake being a poor flowing paperweight I remember I came across a discussion about this searching for something and I believe that it was argued that it may not be the greatest flowing, but you can still make quite a bit of power on the stock manifolds. This was coming from TonyD and Jeffp arguing for the stock manifold.

Personally I'd go with the EFI, but there are times where I begin to hate the EFI when it comes to tracking down little wiring issues.

a good porting will open the intake up alot, the restriction is in the runners.
most people gasket match the openings of the runners and call it a day but the rest of the runner is still a bottle neck, open all of that up.

SHADY280 Oct 13, 2009 10:15 AM

yeah i have several manifolds to play with, but this will net the best tuning for the time being. not only that, if i sell them, its easier to sell a running carb, than dirty ones that need rebuild. i hope i can get 1000 for them later. i like the lone wolf manifold and mega squirt. i suppose i could build a manifold, but for 600 bux.... and mega squirt because its cheap and works. lots of data on it. pontiac kid, you can run megasquirt for break in, just load in a general tune. itll prolly still be better than any stock ecu tune. dont worry about wiping a cam lobe, just break it in properly.

I'm a fan of fuel injection over carbs. :)

depends, I love the simplicity of a carb for a DD, but for anything serious EFI pwns all...

skib Oct 13, 2009 03:02 PM

a nice EFI/ECU set up is great for spot on tuning, data log, ect.

but tripples are ****ing cool :023:

SHADY280 Oct 13, 2009 05:30 PM

just starting to wonder what i should do about the injection fuel return line???? plug it or is there a way to make it recirculate at 3.5 psi. i already have a adj. pressure reg and guage under the hood.

BlueKitsune Oct 13, 2009 05:35 PM

I noticed on my SUs There seems to be a return line I guess its to fight against vapor lock

I just pugged it off when I was running SU's
