Tranny go bye bye...

Well, got my new wheel and tires on the car, put my new clutch in... I had a gnarly noise coming from the tranny before replacing the clutch, I thought/hoped it was the throw out bearing. The noise didn't go away.

so today we replaced the slave cylinder (unrelated but needed to get done anyway) and re-adjusted the pedal. I took it out on the road and the tranny decided that today was a good day to die.

Starting off from a stop in first gear I heard a loud bang followed immediatly by the car jumping out of gear and then the once gnarly noise turning into a horrific noise.

MSA is 8 days away and now I need a transmission... Sweet.

Rod.

damn that sucks, atleast you didnt blow the engine.

Bleach 04-22-2006 02:16 PM

oh man that sucks... but at least you live close enough you could push your car there! :D ok, maybe not that close.

jfairladyz 04-22-2006 03:17 PM

Better hit up Ecology ;)

n00blar 04-22-2006 03:29 PM

Oh man, if you didn't live so far; I bought an '82 ZX (2+2) for parts only; the car has a standard tranny that I won't be needing since mine is auto. Car runs and had a problem with the clutch (I had to pump clutch to switch gears) but I was able to hit all gears.

Just be glad it isnt the morning of like last year. Get a pick n pull tranny and be ready for sunday!!

lww 04-22-2006 10:11 PM

Tranny swap = 2 hours max with a lift... And I know you got a lift!

RodMoyes 04-22-2006 10:50 PM

^ Actually, it's more like 30 minutes with a lift... i just need to FIND a tranny that I can swap in there. I'm going to Ecology in the morning and see what I can dig up. I was just there yesterday, if I had known then what I know now... oh well. It's just one more speed bump in my plans for beautification before the show. Looks like my car will be going pretty mush "as is" asthetically speaking.

Rod.

jfairladyz 04-22-2006 10:53 PM

Atleast you've got them big beautiful hoops to offset any other minor cosmetic blemishes ;) The more I look at your sig pic the better those wheels look.

entropy31 04-23-2006 12:35 AM

ouch. if it isnt one thing, its always the other. that z will never let you rest rod. good luck on finding a tranny before the show. and those wheels just get better looking every time i see them. i'm starting to think they would look pretty good on my z32.

Heat shields? We don't need no stinking heat shields! ;)

Noob, what is the inside color of that 2+2?

SHADY280 04-23-2006 01:40 PM

you dont seem to have any luck with the msa show thing do you rod!! or is it luck that it makes it?

WildmaN 04-23-2006 08:41 PM

Man that suck Rod, hope you find another one. I thought there was a fellow zdriver on here. That offered me a couple of 5-speed trannys. It was posted in my tranny won't go in any gear thread. Anyway I guess it is my turn to say "Keep the faith, just another obstacle to overcome" As much as you have kept on me in the past. You should have enough for your setbacks you come across. I have faith, that some nice fellow, will help you out. And will have a spare good working tranny for you. I wish you the best of luck bro', and God bless.

lww 04-23-2006 08:46 PM

Rod, I can bring the 4 speed from my 240z down with me if you'd like...

Other than a broken T5 and another broken 4 speed, that's all I got... ;(

WildmaN 04-23-2006 08:46 PM

Well here is the thread that the guys offered me a couple of trannys. His name was 383Zjuiced. Maybe you can contact him, hopefully he isn't too far from you.

https://www.zdriver.com/forums/280zx-performance-technical-79/tranny-wont-go-any-gear-17541/

Edit, yeah he is in Ft Lauderdale Florida, a little far from where you are in Cali. Probably wouldn't be worth the shipping cost. Well I tried anyway, sorry for lifting your spirits up. But I am sure you will get one soon.

HybridS130 04-23-2006 08:56 PM

Damn that sucks man, it's a shame you're all the way on that side of the country because I have a perfectly good 2 seater 5-speed in my backyard still attached to the car.

jfairladyz 04-23-2006 10:12 PM

Come on guys, if he's got the time then he'll find another tranny. There are like 2 Ecologies within an hour of him and a few pick-a-parts just north of him too. I've yet to venture into any of the self service yards in southern Cali and not find a Z with an intact transmission. So it's just a matter of Rod finding the time to get out there and get one before MSA.

RodMoyes 04-24-2006 06:34 AM

Well, no luck so far. Out of all the ZX's at the yard, all but two were automatics and the two that were 5 speeds were unusable.

Now that the weekend is over, I'm going to make some phone calls this morning and see what I can round up.

Bust ass boy! Clock's a tickin! :fglob:

RodMoyes 04-24-2006 09:15 AM

Well, there's a transmission shop that we deal with a lot that is very good. I called them and told them what was up with my tranny and they're going to hook me up with a sweet deal on rebuilding my current tranny.

So, I have to cut my exhaust in half again (after having to have it re-welded the other day because we had to cut it to get the trans out already.) , drop the tranny and take it over to them and drop it off. It should take a couple days for them to get it all apart, fixed and back together. Then I'll put it back in and have my exhaust FLANGED this time so it won't be a problem in the future.

If all goes according to plan, it will be redy to roll to the show, but it may look a little ugly when it gets there.

Rod.

Carl's Z 04-24-2006 01:19 PM

I tried to look for a good Rob Schneider pic to say "You can do it", as in Happy Gilmore, etc., but couldn't, sadly. Anyways, Rod, you CAN do it by MSA. You 'da Man.

Carl :038:

I'll definately see you next year!!!

RodMoyes 04-24-2006 04:43 PM

Transmission is at the shop... car is stranded on a lift at my shop. That's not the worst part though...

I'm driving a KIA until it's fixed! :099:
