Strut Tower Bars

Basically, I am wanted to custom fabricate a strut tower bar for my 1979. I was wondering if anybody had any input on what kind of metal, or measurements for that matter. Pictures would also be helpful. Right now I am just focusing on the rear, but I will eventually end up doing the front as well.

Thanks,

Derek

I made a rear one for my Z. Check out my cardomain page. :D

EDIT... page 3 for the strut bar.

get some 1.5" roll cage tubing and weld it between the strut towers...

Thanks, but you wouldn't happen to have the measurements for the plate would you?

I think the tower plates were something like 14 gauge steel. The bar was just a square bar tube I got from a welding shop. Hardened steel is best, but more expensive. Someday I will finish my front bar, made from a spare front anti-sway bar flipped upside down.

I think we may have misunderstood each other. I meant like the actual physical measurements of the tower. Reason I am asking, is my car isn't available to measure on right now, but I want to do something in the meanwhile.

Thanks again,

Derek

ah... I was figuring you could just measure your own car.... which you should actually do. My car might not have the exact same measurement as yours. I'm not near my garage till tomorrow, so I can measure then.

Unless you thread the ends, I wouldn't recommend you fabricate one out of somebody else's measurements.

You'd be amazed at how much variation was acceptable from the factory and then throw 25 years of accidents and unibody flex into the mix and your bolt holes may not line up...

you can use any sort of steel really, i used 1/4 wall 1.25 dia tubing. the front i just bought. 100 bucks and no welding! on my g/f's car i bought a cheap ebay piece for 7 bux, it actually worked, no kidding, did the same affects as my fancy heim ends one. as long as you hook the 2 together, you cant go wrong.
