Yes, there was a Diesel Maxima. By stroking and boring the engine you can get as much as 3.1 L

The 1st Generation Maxima was made from 1981-84. It had an L24 straight six and was RWD. The Diesel maxima was a stroked 2.4L to come out at 2.8L with very high compression. I think it was only made for a couple years. Maybe 82-83. The cranks go for $250-300 on the internet or from Datsun people who know their valvue. Might be cheaper to buy it from a yard or even buy the whole engine for 200 from a yard. (if you can find one)

This requires you to collect certain pistons, connecting rods, and grind some of the block for clearances. Here is a huge writeup on the whole process which has many ways to do it. In your case, you can build the engine with a slightly lower compression ratio knowning that it will be turbocharged. I think the cost of doing this buildup is fairly expensive, but not much more expensive than doing a full and proper L28 engine rebuild. The turbo equipment will be additional cost on top of this.
