Sticking Wastegate Problems
Hello, I own an 83zxt, and have been having some difficulties with my wastegate not opening as fast as it should. The wastegate seems too be very rusty on the exterior. I also removed the actuater and tried working the shaft back and forth for awhile and that helped somewhat but it's still not that responsive. This is what happens, if I put more than 3/4 throttle the boost will spike well above stock boost whitch makes my pop off valve go crazy. Basically what i'm asking is...
1. How can I loosen up the wastegate shaft?
2. What can I do to fix my POV to handle a bit more boost?
Thanks in Advance...

There are a couple of ways to fix your POV to handle more boost (OK, 3 ways):
1. If you just want to run a few more psi like maybe 8-10, you can go to your helpful hardware man and get some big washers to shim up the spring in the valve. You can put about 3 of them in before the spring is all the way compressed. This should allow you to run 8-10 psi of boost.
2. If you are wanting to run higher than 10 psi you can visit the helpful hardware man again and in the screen door section you should find some compression springs that will fit into the housing and around the valve itself. You will probably have to cut one to fit. The one I got was about 6 inches long. When cut to fit, the POV will open at about 26 psi (in mine anyway).
3. This is probably the easiest but also could be hazardous to the health of your motor. You can take the POV out and plug the hole with a pipe plug. Several people have done this but it gives you no protection from boost spike.
I tried both 1 and 2 and now I've stayed with #2. It was the best and cheapest mod I've done. About $2 for 40-50 more horsepower. I hope this helps.
