sputter and backfire
 

My 280 has had performance problems for a while it did not accelerate properly and had a slight backfire, then my injectors went, so i replaced them, it still has a sputter and that slight backfire, is it the timing and is it adjutable, if not then please help. What could it possibly be.

Did you replace the injector holders when you replaced the injectors. It could be that they have a crack in them. That is what happened to me and I replaced those and it stopped backfiring.

Also check for vacuum leaks and leaks in the exhaust system from the manifold back if the above doesn't pinpoint your problem. There are a couple other things to look for, but for now it's probably best to start small and work to bigger.

Could very well be ignition timing or your vaccume advance not working properly. Valve timing could be a small part of it as well.

Ignition timing is not hard to fix. just look at the distributor, see that the rotor has proper play and snaps back like it should. Adjust it with a timing light. Should just be in the center of the manual adjustment if everything else is ok. For the valve timing, you need to replace your timing chain and other components. A timing set will give you the timing chain, chain guides, chain tensioner, two sprockets, and possibly a crank bearing. Set the new chain/upper sprocket at position #2 for better low end torque.

i have ordered 3 new injector holders and when they get in i will change them, I have removed the distributor cap and the rotor does not spring back....it is exreamly stiff. I can tell that the vacume cylinder has a leak as well. How on earth do I take this thing apart to clean it up and get it running properly.
