Restoring 280zx gas tank

Has anyone here restored a 280zx gas tank. I purchased the por15 kit. There is a plastic baffle in the tank where the fuel pickup and sending unit goes. It is held down by three metal tabs. If you are to coat the tank is it best that it is in place or floating around the tank. The holes where the tabs are is where the gas gets into the area where the filter and sending unit is so when coating the tank if the baffle is in place the hole will for sure be plugged.

I think I have two options.

1) drill extra holes into the baffle on the side of the baffle so that gas can get in and I can clear them if the liner plugs them.

2) leave the baffle float around until after the linner sets.

Either way may provide poor results. I think after typing this I will do number 1.

By the way, the filter in the tank was completely varnished over so I am sure the fuel pump would have had trouble pumping fuel. This may be a reason for fuel pump failure on some of these cars.
