r32 motor in a 280?
My mate has a 89 r32 skyline gts-t with an rb20 det turbo, and wants to upgrade to an r34 motor. if i bought his rb20, how easily would it replace the rb28 in my 1981 280zx datto?
many thanks, Jono |
It's doable... not an easy task though... Everything must be fabricated
|
What is an RB28??
|
Not worth it.. too much $$ when something breaks..
|
I think he meant his L28. And the RB swap into the 280zx is supposed to be easier than any of the other Z's. The mounts only require minimal modification to make the motor fit but it sits high and far forward with modified stock mounts. But there is alot of other stuff that needs to be modded too. And if you can do the fabrication yourself then in the future if you ever want to swap the RB20 out for an RB25/26 the mounts would already be set up for one of those motors making that swap a bolt in procedure. And remember, in Japan the Z31 actually came with the RB20 in some them, so hey, technically it's a Z motor too.

I am saying throw a piston or drop a valve and see what happens$$$
|
Yeah but you gotta remember that this guy is in Aust. and Skylines aren't as rare down there. So parts probably aren't nearly as expensive as they are here in the states for the RB's. The L series is probably seen less than the RB is down there. Especially like the RB30's. I heard those are like a dime a dozen down under. But that's just what I heard. Up here parts are ridiculous for the RB though so I hear what you're saying.
|
:D true true I didnt look at that... I have been gone a while I forgot how this posting stuff works :D
|
Yeah it was pretty time consuming coming back from my little moving vacation. Trying to catch up with all the threads and new members I missed while I was gone. I'm doing alright now though, all caught up :D Though it does take me 10x as long to read everything now that I've been downgraded to dial up on the in-laws computer here :D
|
either way, check out hybridz.org, they have a forum dedicated to RB swapped Z's... Also a sticky faq that has some GREAT info.

fuk yeh BRO another aussie!! and from perth TOO, where u located dude??
i live in bullcreek, south of the river towards freo. we gotta go Zing sometime!!!! As fort the swap same exact swap ill be doing in a few months, engine fits in like it was made for the car. you can custom make enigne mounts or use the mounts from a 200zr from japan check out www.nismoparts.com for prices on the zr mounts. you will still need to custom make the tranny mount though. the zr mounts are costing me about 90 aussie dollers incl shipping. another thing is you will need to custom the sump as it is slighly the wrong shape for the zx, you can once again order the sump parts from the ZR or the easier and cheeper option is to simply cut the sump and rotate it 180 degrees till it all fits in nicely. ul need to do some drive train modifications aswell, appart fom that its a simple as an engine swap can get, make sure if u buy the motor you get all the parts u need like ECU and all that, ill just be aiming for a front cut when i get around to buying mine. The motor puts out 210 hp stock and is easy to get hp gains after you start modding. The Rb is lighter than the L28, puts out more power and is more economical too. All good i reken. let me know if u need anymore details. Pete |
280's in aus...
Hey Champ,
Thanks 4 the info. yeah, the engine i might b getting is already heavily modded... razo tuned, motech racing mod chip, apex pod filter and that... i guess since your in perth its not pointless to say me and my mate got that skyline upto around 280km/h on the good old graham farmer freeway... its a beast.... but my mate being the power hungry rev-head he is wants a r34 rb26 twin turbo so im getting his motor when he upgrades, but it mightnt even happen knowing him... he lost his icense for 21 months for a high speed chase through swan view/maida vale and surrounding areas... personally, i live in swan view, im only 17 and dont have my lisence yet but when i do (november hopefully) maybe we can meet up and work on our cars and go "Zing"... anyway, my msn is rockindotcom@hotmail.com if you wanna talk 280 sometime, untill then... happy "Zing" hahaha :p Jono |
thanks dynamicj, sweet ride
hey dynamicj,
thanks 4 the info on the rb20 in a 280... i like your beast, is that a chevy 5.7 litre? or ford? either way thats awesome, expencive tho, especially with those storms up there in the us our petrol prices are sky-rocketing because of that... dunno whether you understand the exchange rate but fuel is getting upto $1.30 a litre now, but i guess from what ive heard, most americans have gas driven cars so thats not too bad... anyway, good to hear some feed back cheers Jono  |
Failadyj Knows His Stuff!
well done fairlady, im quite impressed, youre so right about the rb population down here... theres so many, lots of 280's around too. theyre all different to the american version tho. all u see on the net is 2 seater 280s and turbos. down here we dont have either, theyre all the 2 plus 2 model... btw everyone, did i mention i actually have 2 280zx's. 1 1979 fairlady non targa auto (white, spare parts) and my baby is a 1981 targa auto in that wine red colour... back to the rbs tho... mostly we have rb30s in australia, those things are literally EVERYWHERE! we even borrowed the motor for our own holden commodore vl calais which also had a turbo option... this is what i origonally wanted for my car because it would fall into my car with vertually no modifactation, am i right? but then my mate suggested putting his rb20 on the market and i jumped on it straight away... why put an old rb30 in my car when i can get a super rb20 instead? anyway dude, i have to go. it was great hearing from you, thanks Jono |
You could always do the RB30 block/RB25 head. That way you get the big displacement of the RB30 with the modern dual overhead cam turbo of the RB25. You can also swap on an RB26DETT head to that motor but thats pushing the budget right there. I was considering that swap(RB30) and was talking to a couple of people from down there about sending one up here in the future. Between the R31's and and the Holden's using them they seem to be pretty common place down there. Which is the complete opposite of up here. It's much easier to find an RB26/25 than the RB30. But anyways, with that head swap, there are a lot of writeups on the web (it's not a direct bolt on, some mods needed) and I think I have a writeup in an email from somebody who's succesfully completed one. If you want to take a look at it I can email it to you if I still have it.

wtf?
sorry fairlady but that all sounds like jibberish to me  , maybe take these points into consideration:
1. this is my first car 2. this is my first major mod 3. im 17 and not very expierienced with all the things u said 4. im getting a rb20 REALLY cheap im not interested in anything else (very tight budget) sorry again but i just need u 2 understand that im trying 2 keep this as simple as possible! thanks anyway jono  |
Hey it's cool man. I was just letting you know an option with the RB30. But if budget is a problem then that swaps probably not the best idea. Especially if you're getting the RB20 for really cheap. And it'll definitely take an above beginners knowledge of what you're doing to swap that head on. But more power to you with the RB20. And good luck with the swap.

The RB30DET swap is a pain in the ass in a big and serious way, but the results are basically a larger displacement skyline motor, which is pretty cool if ya ask me. concidered doing te swap for a while but just too much hassel and money and time for me to bother. Those motors make stupid figurs very easily and we r talking hundreds of hp..... Rb20's are old motors u are looking at around 15 or so years and they have their problems too, so make sure the motor is in good condition b4 u buy.
and jono if u going to be looking at spending some cash on the car and doing a motor swap for an imorted turbo jap motor, insurace will be looking to bend u over and plant a big hard nob squarly in ur ass..... Imported car + Young driver + coupe body + engine swap to an imported jap motor with a bad reputation with the authoraties = SORE ASS :( hehehe 280 kph... yeh shit goes passed pretty fast at those speeds hey, my z starts to shake at about 220kph :) maybe a little b4 ur time but u remember at meets all the car ppl around perth used to have at leach hwy mackers? yeh awsome fun! might be starting up agian with any luck, street races and all, yeh good times.... but yeh 4 sure keep me posted on the cars and ur licence and so forth, let me know when ur up for a cruise :) later man |
Hey Pistolio
Thanks 4 the hit Pete and the addy too,
when u usually online? um yeah the rb20s an 89 but was rebuilt in 98 or somethin, its in my mates car atm and ive been in that car a million times so i know its not thrashed and all that, the motors smooth as, ceramic ball bearing turbo set to 14 pounds of boost. itll b so good if i get it i dunno whether its worth it tho, my cars a rust bucket, but what can u expect for 2 grand... whats the prob with rb30s, i was told they fit like a glove since theyre from the same era and so forth, there is an imported skyline r30 or r31 around that i worked on during my tym at ultra tune and it has the exact same motor as my car, the l28... i figured if a 280 motor fits an old skyline then an old skyline motor (rb30) would b perfect for a 280... whatever at least your z goes 220... mines piss weak, its got so many probs... loose auto mainly, the day i got it dad dragged a lowrider hilux in it and kept up but was like 5 car lengths behind the whole tym... in traffic too at like midnight, thats the fast my pos has ever been... 180km/h tell me bout your ride dude... colour? trans? year? model? t-top? codition? it is a 2 plus 2 yeah? i put a post bout that coz it seems no 2by2s in us and no 2 seaters here, a guy at my old work has 1 tho... u should cruise up here there are so many 280s a gold targa like 2 mins from me, this girl i went 2 school with, her bf has a blue and silver targa, he lives near me too, then theres a fully done up red one i see around, a lime green pos, and another red 1 just round the corner... i never noticed thenm till i got 1... well now u know my life story, ill leave u to it... have a good 1 Jono |
im online like 24/7 just cause i leave my pc on and connected all the time pretty much anyway.....
the rb30s will fit the car ok thats not really the issue, the problem with building one for most ppl is money, time and space. most ppl wouldnt have the facilities of the tools/knowhow to rip 2 motors appart and combine them into 1 motor. Time is an issue as it would take a conciderable time and effort to track down all the parts and so forth and money is the big one cause ul need 2 motors and plently of other arts and custom fabrication and stuff, just ask anyone who has done a motor transplant and they can tell you about all the hidden costs involved... its just all the little shit that adds up ... but the result is often worth it. yeh its a 79, 2+2, n/a, auto so basically the slowest of the zx's haha heres a link to to my cardomain page http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2060730 i never see any zx's down this neck of the woods, have seen a beaut red one with a MSA kit and stuff. Yeh should cruise round sometime say hay for sure.. |
