piston and displacment question
 

alright i was thinkin it might be a good idea to change some rings on my car, only reason is i get blue smoke when i coast in gear or engine brake, otherwise i dont have any problems and i am also thinkin that i should do it while i am at it because i'll be replacing the head gasket, pan gasket, mabe doin a clutch and other things so i can hopefully get another 80k out of my engine when i move and i wont have to deal with it.

i was also thinkin while i was at it i could do some fun stuff too.

i was thinkin keepin the same block and heads, unless i magicly find a P90a head, but going with flat tops instead of dished pistons.

but i was wondering would i technically be losing displacment or would it not be enough to matter

as far as i can tell the car still has the dished pistons for "lower compression and better emissions"

flat pistons will decrease displacement, but increase compression, so it's generally a gain in performance. with changing the rings though, look at it this way. those rings have grooves worn in them why? because the cylinder has the same grooves. so if you change the rings, you will put a flat ring onto a rough cylinder.... that ring will wear very quickly, as will the block. basically, you are speeding up the wear process. you have to hone those cylinders when you replace the rings.

always hone when doing rings!!! it will decrease the dispacement such a small amount, but when increasing cr it really puts extra power down.. what you could do is go to the junk yard and get a f54 block, and pull its pistons, factory flat tops!! what head you have now???? ive used a n47 and got good results out of it with flat tops, and i used a p79 that was shaved and got really good results.

i'm pretty sure its a n47 its an early 79, all of my pops and i project the block always gets honed one way or another
