New member. 1982 zx with 77-80 motor swapped; problems with electrics

Hi all. I have purchased a 1982 280zx to with intentions of repainting/tuning up engine to daily drive it. The kid I bought it from said him and a friend swapped an 83 motor into it. well after going over the engine, i found it actually has the N-42/N-47 head combo that came in cars from 77-81.

The issue is wiring harness from the 1982 has two connectors up by the thermostat( the connectors go to the thermotime switch and water temp sensor). But the early motor only has one plug going to the thermotime switch. then there is a green wire and a yellow wire coming from under the thermostat and another plug by that that has 2 air lines coming out of it.

i took a photo of the area for some reference to shed light on what i should do because it doesn't seem wired correctly. Thanks for any help/advice.

The 2 yellow wires that have brown over them are in a cluster with the plug that goes to the distributor.

Welcome to ZDriver!

So... does the car run okay? Does the temp gauge work? I understand your concern about the wiring, but what is your question exactly?

Thank you. Yes it starts on the first click. And the temp guage does work. It just blows some dark gray smoke when i rev it. And i runs bad if I plug in the chts; I am going to replace the it, but my question is : does the wiring up by the thermostat housing look correct? Even if I replace the chts I am worried the wiring up there will cause the motor to continue to run rich.

ps: with the chts unplugged, the car runs and idles just fine. When revved is when you see the dark smoke. When I plug in the chts it idles about 300 rpms higher then bogs dow and quits in about 15 seconds.

Leave that unplugged then. It may just need a tuneup and possibly the afm tuned. If really required go to the wrecker and find an 82 t-stat housing with sensors and use that

Ok! Thanks I'll try to find one and try a more thorough tune up.
