Muffler delete on the Z?
I have noticed two sizeable rust holes on the pan of the stock muffler and was thinking if it would be better to take off the muffler and put a straight pipe?
What advantages and disadvantages would I gain or suffer from doing so? gas mileage? noise? performance? |
Search for "muffler" in the 280zx section. This has been discussed mucho.
Gracias. :D |
If you take off the cat too. It would be insanely loud.
|
It sounds sweet, though, just super loud. I think I have a video of mine posted when I ran with no muffler or cat.
|
Just so you know, if your car already smells like exhaust fumes when you're driving, taking the muffler off is going to make it worse (unless you make a pipe that extends the exhaust out past the rear of the car)
|
Ok guys, thanks. Wouls it sound very very loud than it already is? I'm not sure if it has a catalytic convertor because it's a 79 model.
I wouldn't do any damage to the car or gas mileage would I? |
|
my personal opinion is to not do it... i ran straight pipes and it's WAY TOO LOUD!!
i'm running a gutted catalytic converter and it's abnoxiously loud. it sounds good from inside the car, windows up, but you can't carry on a conversation. i'm almost embarrassed to drive it because of how loud it is. my car was slow to begin with, that's why i decided to gut the cat. now it's slow and loud : P |
you need back-pressure right? its not a junk chevy truck with annoying poping crap that i hear allllllll day long, then they wonder why they go through motors :) NOT saying you shouldnt own a chevy.
|
i have run straight pipe lots, i have 2.5" exhaust n/a, its super loud. cops will always pull you over. even with a glass pack its too loud for the street. it just gets too much attention. cant talk on the phone. dont worry about the motor, with full length pipe the L series love to be opened up from the restriction of the muffler. i did notice some power gain and snappy rpm when i removed the muffler for competition, but my motor is heavily built. as far as stock, you wont see a change much.
|
I'm running dual glasspacks with a 6-2 header, it's really loud, but if you keep the rpm's down (which you should anyways, if you're driving around town lol) it's not that loud at all. it only gets really loud once it hits about 3k rpm ;)
I've also run just the mid pipe back before I got the header on my car, and it probably wasn't any louder than it is now. |
^^^ super loud... Right now i'm running just the downpipe and with the turbo it sounds loud but great at the same time.
|
NA+header sounds way better than turbo on an L-Series...
JUS SAYIN lol |

as long as your definition of "less power" means better throttle response, no lag, less cluttered engine bay, and a better motor all around, then yes ;)

Nuff said... I won't bash your die hard desire for 125hp. |
lol I'll probably get that this weekend with my internally stock motor and just bolt-ons.
lol You saying I don't know much about how motors are built makes me laugh. I've seen 500-600whp dyno graphs, I like how they make about 200 hp at 2500, then at 4500 they're making 500+... lol at the "strict tolerances" that's funny. ANY race motor, or high performance motor is going to have "strict tolerances." |

Apples and oranges... if you are trying to prove a point, ya gotta have a valid argument. |
I said any race motor because you said that turbo motors have more strict tolerances than NA motors, when they don't.
My argument is that I'm right, all the time, no matter what :P |

Obviously you are "right", so just keep on thinking that. I've got better things to do right now that waste typed words. |
And how many race motors have you built? but oh well.
|
Why are you still stuck on race motors? :075: Your whole argument was that all n/a motors are better than turbo motors. Have you ever looked inside a Haynes manual? FSM? Checked the specs between the two? Ever read any book or done ANY research on motor building EVER?
Seriously... I'm done... I feel like I'm talking to a 10 year old. < no offense > |
I wonder what a all that PSI would do to a wooden throttle spacer?... :017:
|
it wouldn't do anything to a wooden spacer lol
And why are you talking about stock motors? I wasn't even talking about stock motors to begin with! |
