Will a MSD 6 ignition work for my 1982 turbo 280zx?
It says it will work for 4,6, and 8 cylinder cars and trucks, but I'm not sure if it will work for my car. Does the multi spark discharge(MSD) ignition increase enough horsepower or torque to justify paying $165 for it? If not, what should I buy to get the greatest horsepower increase?

It will work. Several people have it on their cars, Im planning on getting one. Im not sure what kind of power it adds on a stock engine though.

a rocket from NASA would be a good investment for greatest HP and torque im sure...

Your car will definitely run smoother. You'll probably see a couple horsepower in the higher RPM range. You're supposed to get better gas mileage, but I doubt it's noticeable. A good free flowing exhaust is probably the best low cost mod you could make for your Turbo ZX to start out. They add much more power tto he turbo than they do for an NA.

i just installed my msd yesterday! Its sweet, i feel that it is much smoother. As far as power, im not really sure, but the smoothness in accelleration is amazing.

Im using a 6al with a blaster 2 coil. By the way if you get the setup, you need to buy the tach adapter part #8910 or else your car wont start.

I paid $115 for the 6al, $24 for the tach adapter, and the blaster coil was free... :D

When you get the MSD, don't forget, you need to get a Tach Adapter to make it function properly. I just recently installed a Crane Hi6 digital ignition in my Turbo. I was fortunate enough to get it, plus its matching coil off Craigslist for $110. I'll try and post a pic of the install soon. I have an MSD 6AL that I'm not using, but I'm debating whether to sell it or keep it for my second car.

When you installed the Hi-6, what wire did you use for the ignition module? Is it the blue one or black one? (that will connect to the white wire of the Hi-6) Thanks. I'm going to install this soon on my Z as well. It's a Hi-6 w/ a PS92 coil.

If the rocket engine is out of your price range, an L28 turbo is the next best thing! :D

If you mean what wire to use for the Hi6 input, the black wire w/white stripe is the positive, and the other wire (blue w/stripe I think) is the negative. In order to calibrate the ignition for a 6cyl engine, you must ground the appropriate wire they show you in the directions. I simply put a spade connector on the end of it and plugged it into the ground of the windshield washer reservoir motor, which I had removed. So the positive/negative wiring was just sitting there in the bay until I gave the negative something to do. ^_~

I also have the Crane Hi-6, the Hi-6S version, with the LX-92 coil (a few extra bucks for it to be a lighter and more durable coil? I took it). My ignition was almost dead to start out with, but once I installed this I noticed a great low end boost (older ignition wasn't lighting off all the mixture), and it ran a whole lot smoother.
