miles miles miles
hey well my z has a crap load of miles 259263 but i was wondering if there was anything i could do to make it last a whole lot longer like till at lease 300 thousand. i seen a 280 with 306 and it ran like it just came from the factory but what are some things i could do to make mine last longer....

you could always do an engine rebuild. New rings, knock out the freeze plugs, clean the block from top to bottom, get a valve job, renew any parts with excessive wear, new timing components, and whatever else a rebuild consists of.

Change the oil every 3,000 miles. I'm up to 220,000 on the original build.

Just sold mine with 273k on the ticker. I'd still be driving it if it hadn't gotten some rather dangerous cancer...doh!

Man, I thought my Zed had a lot of miles at 166,500. Guess that's not the case :D

Just hit 240,000 miles and going strong. No engine repiars ever... head never been off. Still doesn't burn oil or have any compression loss.

230,000. Needs a head job though. Got a sticking valve, but otherwise going strong. Making way for an SR20DET within the year though. Better weight distribution, save a ton of weight, and still make enough power to keep me happy.

Man... I thought my 280ZX had a lot of miles when it rolled over to 194,000 just this morning. She still purs like a kitten but with something caught in her throat too. at about 2000 rpm's it starts to make a faint ticking noise from the motor that gets faster as the rpm's go up, any one know what that is? its been doin it since 186,500 miles, but I never got around to having someone look into it.

Its probably just a ticking valve, nothing to worry about.

yeah, don't worry about the ticking, unless it gets to the point where it's making a loud knocking, that's when you seize something up; I speak from experience.

I'm at 259k on original build, and it starts on the first crank every time. It's all about keeping up with the fluids and regular maintenance... :D

Just a little side note here regarding mileage on a 280zx. One thing I have noticed about this car is that it seems like the cars that have the fewest miles, have the most problems... I.E., they like to be driven. I have customers that own 79-83 cars with low mileage, and they burn oil... leak fuel... Foul spark plugs... you name it. Idle time is not kind to these cars. High mielage cars seem to be doing great, provided they were well maintained (oil change, oil change, oil change!!!). I also think that they don't like being babied... I drive my car like I stole it everday of it's life, and it just keeps begging for more (please sir... may I have another.). Car's that get low stress usage seem be drying up and falling apart while those that get hammered are soaking up the abuse and asking for more. Keep the fluids fresh, and these things are pretty much bullet proof. The '83 turbo I just picked scares me because the miles are so low. I hope all of the seals in the engine aren't shriveled up like last years raisins. I can aready tell that it has some blow-by. I hope that letting it run a bit will re-seal some of the gaps, but realistically, I think it's gonna need some help.

... in my defense, I'd like to state that Big-O Legacy tires work wonders on my Dad's '04 Grand Marquis. Grip in all conditions, on a beer budget. :D
