me vs. 1979 Z28

Alright, my friend has a 1979 Camaro Z28, with a 5.7 liter 350, 3-speed auto . He says he can smoke my 1982 turbo 280zx, 3-speed auto. What do y'all think. Where will I smoke him and where will he smoke me?

have you seen the power of those? 175 horsepower to a 3-speed auto on a car that weighs probably 600 more pounds than my car. those cars were detuned for the new emissions standards.

will I win in top speed or 0-60 or 1/4-mile? I have to be able to win at least one.

how bout this... Go race him! if you win... you win, if you lose... you lose, but I know for a fact our little 2.8's will give that (year/model) 5.7 a run for it's money at very least. he's got twice the motor and you'll keep up or take him no problem! I got faith in you ZX brotha! EAT THAT CHEVY! EAT IT! EAT IT! EAT IT!

Car and Driver results for 1981 showed the 280zx turbo/auto was faster 0-60 than the 1981 Corvette 350 4-speed manual.

You'll probably beat him to 60 and maybe even the quarter mile. It reallys depends if his engine is stock or not... or even running well.

The '70's were a bad times for the V-8's. Damn emissions ****'s got a firm grasp on the EPA's testicular region at that time right when technology was working it's way into our fine american auto's. Don't worry about winning or losing til it's over. If you're worried about it, just don't put any money on it. Race him for fun, and, if you win, bragging rights.

Thanks, I guess I'll race him one day. I bet he'll chicken out when it comes race time.

Hey guys what about a stock 2001 camaro 3 speed auto vs a 1980 stock 280zx with a 5 speed the only thing is my 280 has been bored and has higher than stock compression 10:1 or something like that. Let me know what you all think!

Depends on if the camaro has a V-6 or V-8.

I say try it! I think it will be a close race unless you have a 5-speed, then I believe you will win. If you don't win, tell us so I won't make the mistake of going against a V-6 camaro and losing again. I am already 0-1 against a camaro but that was a 1998 Z28. You know a 1998 Z28 is supposed to top out at 157mph stock?

Power braking an auto tranny is the key to a good launch... especially with a turbo.

You want to get the revs as high as possible while holding the car back with the brakes. At the drag strip, you'll have your engine/turbo spooled up as much as possible when the lights drop minimizing turbo lag and auto tranny lag.

I'd race 'em both and watch the look of horror as they look beside them and watch you easily keeping up or passing in 2nd gear...

been ther ,done that

well actually the car I ran was a late 70's model with the 6.6(401) and it was on the roll(40mph).his T/A had my 81 turbo auto only about 5 ft until we hit somewhere 75mph.With my rpms around 4800 and the turbo @6psi(stock car stock gauge)By the time 95 came around (guess) the little z that could had the big dog Pontiac by about a car and a half.I would launch with my turbo at about 3psi and manually shift ,but no further than a mile preferably the 1/4.350's are notorious for running out of steam at high rpm even if they sound like locomotives

youre speaking of power braking.. when i power brake my car only revs up so high but if i keep it in neutral and rev it up to 5000 and then i shift into first i can peel out and leave a 20+ ft trail.. and my car is all stock except for a cold air intake and boost set to ~12 psi... and i kick alot of asses.. and all i run is my 3 speed auto.. i would feel confident in the fact that you can beat him

I raced my dad in his V6 camaro and he pulled on me from the line and never looked back. It was pretty close, but there was no way I was going to beat him. My Z is all stock though except the AC was yanked along with the power steering. He has a a5 speed though. I tried my luck against a SS (not sure what year, but it was a newer one, early 2k maybe) at the track and that guy roasted the ish out of his tires off the line and was still pulling the whole time. No contest. My cars not turbo though so....

I would avoid doing the drop shifting like that. Your tranny, u-joints and cv's may not hold up much longer...

How high does your car rev when you're power braking?
