Lsd?!?!

I'm restoring a '79 280zx hard top two seater, and I'm doing a few performance upgrades to satisfy myself as of right now, and I'm very curious about limited slip diff's. I saw one guy who found a late 80's 300zx turbo LSD and applied it to his 280... so I'm even more curious at this point, can anyone help me with finding one, and what I'll need to do???

Yes, those are found in only the 87-89 300ZX turbo. Only the turbo models.

Also, they are very rare and usually bring in a good amount of money when sold used. $500-600 each. New LSD units can be purchased to install into your open R200 for about $800-900 each. I forgot where those companies are...

I dont know much about lsd other then the basics of how it works so im not sure if this is any good but I found it on ebay. I believe you can get this brand LSD from NOPI too.

The Phantom Grip is supposed to mimic the effect of an LSD. It doesn't work as well as a "real" LSD. But if you're not an aggressive driver in the turns, I suppose it might be a cheaper alternative to consider.

The Phantom Grip is a VERY poor approximation of a real LSD.

Do a search on HybridZ.org and ZCar.com and you'll find long threads discussing the issues with the Phantom Grip.

It's a VERY small improvment that doesn't seem to last very long. You're better off waiting for a real 87-89 Turbo 300zx LSD to show up in your local junk yard (it may take a LONG time) or to use that time to save enough money to buy a first gen 300zx non-Turbo open diff and go to Reider Racing:

www.reiderracing.com/pgpowerbrute.htm

or West Coast Differentials:

www.differentials.com

Tell them you want pricing on the 12mm PG Power Brute:

www.precisiongear.com/powerbrute.htm

for the Nissan 12mm R200 part # LOM-59-12. Should run about $550 + $100 for the open diff. In the end, you'll have a real LSD for $650 + installation. About half the price of a Quaife but still the same price if you find the the Turbo LSD in the junk yard. With the open diff, you'll most likely get a 3.90:1 so you'll have a little shorter gears than the 3.70:1 that comes in the Turbo 300zx.

Make sure you get the stub axles with the 300zx R200. You'll need them to mate to yours.

Good luck.

I bought a Phantom Grip and I must say it does seem to work. But it's nothing more than two hardened steel rectangular blocks with 4 strong die springs that keep pressure against the inside faces of the spider gears. They didn't fit and the instructions said to grind off the spider gears-NOT A GOOD IDEA! The first thing to go would be the case hardening down to softer metal shortening the life of the spiders. I took it to work and milled about .040 off each block. I also blueprinted it too because I could make them for about $20. I see them on eBay for $285, way to much money for what you get, but cheaper than a real LSD.
