its final, my zx engine is dead.

the engine finally died on it, after some 280k miles of fun driving, she finally took her last breath and quit, so now im gonna go the the J-yard in a few weeks, hopefully get a turbo motor and breath new life into her.

there, was that dramatic enough?

Well it sucks that it happened but atleast you'll get a fresh slate with the engine. So what happened anyways?

the bottom end/top end, the last owner screwed up when he rebuilt the n47 head on it and forgot to torque down the cam towers, so it knocked heavily up in the RPM range, and the bottom end was just old, 280k miles took its toll.

Hey, you can come to vegas and take my motor for free. It supposedly runs. I'll even throw in a warrenty. If it don't run you can return it or throw it away

so it would seem to me, that if the cam towers were re-installed correctly, the car would prolly still be out rackin on the miles for a lil longer.

ah yes... the age old question of "how long does an engine last?" and the age old answer: IT DEPENDS ON HOW WELL YOU TAKE CARE OF YOUR ENGINE. Usually it's the people that say "the engine is dead @ 200k miles" that are the people that don't know how to take care of a car.

These engines will last many hundreds of thousands of miles if properly cared for. I've taken them apart with over 200,000 miles and you can still see the original machining hatch marks on them. Yes, they are that strong. Abuse and lack of maintenance will dramatically shorten their lifespan, but I know people in the Z community with well over 300,000 and a few near the 500,000 mark. Those are rare, but mostly because accidents and rust tend to remove them from service before the engines go bad.

These aren't Detroit motors that need a rebuild after every 100k miles...

Yup, my turbo motor is pushing 200K and you can still see the honing in the cylinders. Of course the inside of the combustion chambers was pretty rank, but overall it's mechanically in great shape.

My NA had over 260,000 miles on it and it ran strong. Had it's share of electrical gremlins and needed the valve stem seals replaced along with other regular mainanence but mechanically that motor was still super sound. It showed no signs of letting go and if I hadn't scrapped it, it would most likely still be running strong.

my n/a motor had 235000km on it and the only reason i took it out and swapped it is to get more power, i still got the old one and its clean inside, still had the factory headgasket, or was never machined

Well my motor I currently have in my '82, runs like a champ. Once I got it dialed in and timed correctly. It has about 135k on it ('81, and my Z ('82) has over 193k on him. Now of course my original motor in the '82 was badly abused, and ran on 3 cylinders. But I will practice on that motor, and learn to rebuild my first engine.
