Lowering Compression For NA To Turbocharge?

Yeah I was wondering how would I go about lowering my compression of the NA 82 280zx I have so I can turbocharge it. And exactly what is the compression at right now with no mods cause thats were I'm at. I need pretty extensive detail of what to do what to buy how do I know if I'm going about it properly. Thankz.

Youre at 8.8:1 compression

Replace the block with an F54 block from a turbo engine, then replace the head with a P90 from a turbo engine... then get a turbo and turbo ECU... :D hehe...

Or just stick dished pistons in your NA block. The 1975-80 280Z and ZX L28 all had dished pistons from the factory. Your P79 head can be reused for the turbo. (if you must)
This will give you 7.5:1 compression which is what you want for this old of an engine.

You could also avoid switching out the pistons and use a 2mm head gasket. Not exactly the best way to go about dropping compression but it would allow you to avoid any major engine work. If you are interested in swapping to dished pistons I actually have an extra set that I would sell you.

so if i swap out the pistons and add on a tubro can i get away with running the stock ECU for a bit or will i have to have that right away  is there any thing you can think of that i will need besides that

you need the turbo ECU to control fuel under boost....

DoTheDrew888 04-24-2005 07:32 PM

Im pretty sure you will need the turbo intake manifold and I know you will need the turbo AFM.

Skully 04-24-2005 07:33 PM

im keeping my na manifold for the intake, but exhaust you need turbo one..

assimilated420 04-24-2005 09:40 PM

basically, you need...
~turbo
~dished pistons
~turbo ECU
~turbo injectors(prolly not right away but youre going to lose performance as the turbo ones are designed for it)
~exhaust manifold
~intake manifold(if properly modified)
~turbo AFM

if youre looking for performance i would suggest also getting:
~a performance ECU
~boost controller
~intercooler
~upgraded exhaust
~bigger injectors
~faster flowing fuel filter & pump
~performance ignition
~any other small here and there mods like suspension, tires, and losing any extra weight.. for such a small car they seem to weigh a lil bit...

thank you much i think iam going to start buying a peice at a time and mabe some day i will have a tubro car

You and I both, bro. You and I both. The next time my Zed legally sees the streets, she'll be boosted and bad-ass.
Of course, that's paycheck permitting. :D
