How to look up vin #
OK my friend had some parts out of a Z sitting in his shop. The car is long gone but we do have the vin #. I called the Nissan dealer and had no help finding which car the parts came out of. Then I did a search online and the sites can't find the 12 digit vins only the 16 digits.
So can any one help decode this Vin #- HGS130-163301 Thats all there is, no more no less, it isn't missing any either. I beleive it is a 280zx because is has s130 and my friend thinks it was a 2+2. Thanks for any help. |
H(L28E), G(2+2),S130(AKA 280ZX), 163301 (The Serial number of that Z)
Thats really all the vin will tell you on the Early 280ZXs |
Thanks for the help.
But theres no way to tell the year? |
In the driver side door jam.

The car is long gone.

Basically all you can tell is it was made before 02/81

You might be able to figure out what year it was produced, i was looking on another forum, because I too have a 79 with a vin with just numbers on the right:http://www.zcar.com/70-83_tech_discu..._886716.0.html
one guy said that the numbers mean which number it was on the product line, for example, yours was the 163,301 280zx made, so if you could find someone elses to compare it to, say you find number 164,000 or something, and it is a 1980 or something then you will know yours was made before 1981 and possibly made in 1980. Or better yet if you could find how many of each year of 280zx's were made then you could figure out which year yours is, say if 120,000 1979 280zx's were made then you would know yours is not a 79 because it has a higher number then 120,000. but if 80,000 280zx's were made in 80, then you would know yours is a 1980 280zx because, 120,000+80,000=200,000 and yours is under that. I kinda simplified because I was getting confused writing this, because like today I think the cars were made a year before there actual year, so a 1980 would be made in 79 and 79 made in 78, and so on. |
That number HGS130-163301 isn’t a full modern VIN — it’s actually the old Japanese chassis number used by Nissan, where S130 refers to the S130 Z-car platform (which includes 280ZX models). Because older Japanese cars used shorter chassis numbers rather than the 17-digit VIN format, most online VIN check tools won’t recognize it, which is why dealer or generic VIN decoders can’t help. If you want to be sure exactly which year and configuration it came from, your best bet is to contact a Z-car specialist, a classic Nissan parts catalog, or a forum that supports chassis number lookups — they can tell you chassis HGS130-163301 corresponds to a specific 280ZX variant. For vehicles that do have 17-digit VINs, tools like the one at Volvo VIN Check can decode the original build details, including engine and model info, but with these older Nissan chassis codes you need a dedicated Nissan/Z-car reference source.
