How does this happen???
So, Bob79280ZX started tearing down his motor to see how bad the damage was... After taking off the manifolds, this is what he found so far...

How the hell does this happen? It's one of the sleeves from inside the head to the exhaust manifold. WTF?
Rod.

I assume this is from the stock N47 head with the exhaust port liners that came in his '79 ZX?
Was the car stored for a long period of time? Ever had the head gasket replaced?
Corrosion from a leaky head gasket could have deteriorated the steel liner to the extent that it broke free from the aluminum head. Check the liner seat in the head before putting this back together. If it took some of the aluminum away when it broke free, he may need to have it 'ported' back to smoothness. Then again, he may have to consider removing the rest of the liners to maintain an even flow between cylinders. At that point, I would consider getting a new head altogether. Either a P79 or an N42. The P79's would be the most readily available.
Where did you find it? I assume he found it lodged at a ****-eyed angle between the exhaust port and the exhaust manifold?

I guarantee you it wasn't the sulfur in the fuel or the heat cycles. These don't come out. Anyone who's ever tried to remove them will attest to the difficulty.
About the best way to remove them is to just get a die grinder and take them down flush with the exhaust port where they are cast into the head.
I don't recommend this because the performance improvement is dubious on an NA car unless you're making some really big power and the time and effort is better spent with other work first.

Yeah, it was lodged in there just like you said L-Dub. That is some crazy **** right there. All I know, is that he showed up at my house yesterday afternoon and pulled it out of his pocket and asked "do you know what this is?"... and I said "yeah!, how the hell did you get it out of the head!?"... then he told me the sad tale.
He's got a "donor" motor I think he's going to swap in so I'm not too concerened about his current head and its ability to recover from its injuries... He just wanted to tear it down to see what all happened during its cataclysmic freeway meltdown.
Once again, I give him MAD PROPS for doing to an L28 what nobody has managed to do that we know of...

Well, I went and saw the damage first hand today...
Damn!
Whatever stopped the oil from circulating did some very unkind things to that motor. The head is now a paperweight. Aside from the missing sleeve, the valves are all burnt and one is spectacularly bent. the thing looks heat baked like nothing I have ever seen.
The Block:
Wow! One cylinder wall is badly scored. All of the pistons have baked on something? all over the tops and little burnt metal flakes.
The Oil pan:
Was full of copper shavings. The bearings were all dry and cooked...
Time for a whole new motor I believe.
I took some good pics, but my camera is currently having a pissy fit. I'll try and coerece the images from t again tomorrow.

Thanks for the props guys. Just thought i would chime in, seeing as how its my motor that blew up, but i would like to thank my PR chief Rod, for fielding all the neccesary questions. Yes, i have done the impossible, fried an L28. Well, for such an accomplishment, it is still kind of a bummer. Having to rebuild it is going to cost a lot of money i dont have. oh well, i will z less for a little while. I do however get to drive a bitchin Lancer in the meantime, ok, so its a base model, but its got ac bitches.
You guys take care out there in z land. Thanks for the props, im sure as the project continues, more details will be released.
Later Days,
Bob
P.S. Thank L-dub, i like the title.

dont feel to bad i did the same to my first zx motor in my 81 my gas pedel got stuck and the engine reved to 9 grand, but i still had all of the sleves in! (lol!) I spun two rod barings and smoked all the valves, pistons ect...
So have fun with the new engine and good luck.
