hesitation and sluggish performance
hesitation and sluggish performance
My z hesitates upon accelaration when cold, when it's warmed up it is fine but it is a bit sluggish when I accelerate, it's not responsive and I have to push the gas pedal a bit harder to get it going especially on surface street. I changed the following:
- Spark plugs and wires using NGK's.
- Fuel filter
- PCV valve
- O2 sensor
- Oil change and oil filter
- Air filter
I don't know how to adjust the AFM
Any thoughts will be appreciated.
Thanks

its most likey your AFM. my car was going through the same thing a year ago... till i swapwd out my afm.. ever since then i havent had that prolem.. you might check to see if you have any vacuume leaks.. secially on the rubber boots from the afm to the throttle body....
Thanks.
Which are the other vacuum hoses/lines that may be leaking? I'm not familiar with those. Also, I noticed when I changed the spark plugs that they are gray almost white which means that it may be running rich, is there an easy way to adjust that?
I also read somewhere that the AFM can be adjusted, is that possible and how easy or difficult that is?
Thanks again

There is a screw on the side of the AFM that you can adjust to open or close up the flow in the lower right hand corner as you are looking down at it.
Also...let me know what solves the problem. I had the same thing happen to me, but now it won't even start!!!!!

Adjusting the AFM is a last resort. You don't want to do this to cover up another probelm with the engine such as rich or lean mixture. If the AFM is bad, adjusting it will only correct your fuel ratio at certain rpms. Replace it if it is bad or look in other areas for the problem.
Ok, thanks. Could you tell me what other areas I should look into to fix the problem? I'm not that experience but I'm willing to try instead of taking it in to the shop. It's hard to find a good mechanic who has enough patience and knowledge to work on these cars. Thanks.
It could be your ignition timing or vaccume advance. Try advancing the distributor a little by losening the bolt on the base of the distributor and turning it a litte.
Also, check the action on the advance. Remove the distrib cap and turn the rotor a little with your hand. It should turn to one side almost an inch and then spring back when released. If the movement is smooth and doesn't bind or grind then its in good shape.
