exhaust

what is the best sounding muffler for a 280zx turbo, i like it deep and kinda loud.
should i go for a good american muffler like flowmaster, magnaflow, borla
or should i get one of those turbo mufflers from msa. i curently do not have a muffler because the previous owner cut it off.
tell me what kind of mufflers ya'll have and how they sound.

as it says in msa, the turbo muffler puts out a euro tone, so probably similar to a porsche-ish.

I would say a 3" straight pipe with no muffler.

I'm gonna get the MSA 6-2 headers, then two mechanical exhaust spliters, the two into one pipe, then the turbo exhaust system from MSA all the way back. the lever for my exhaust spliters is going to be the pull **** for the rear wipers (I believe that's what it's for). The pipes that come off the spliters will be 3" running along the rocker panel ( tucked underneath) with a tip that pionts straight on the ground! No one will ever see it, but imagine that resonance! obviosly it's DUAL sidepipes.

If it's deep sound you want, go with an american muffler like Magnaflow or Borla. Those seem like their more tuned for sound then performance. Anything straight through isn't going to sound to deep, more of a wail. Some people like that though. Most aftermarket hi-po Japanese mufflers are straight through designs. Straight pipes run all the way back will sound much like a straight through, but a lot louder. A muffler on an stock car won't net much power anyways, so sound should be your main concern at this point. I'd recommend anyone of the muffler brands you mentioned, though I am partial to the sound of Borla If you do a big ol' turbo build like s/c, you're gonna want something that's very unrestrictive. But sound quality won't be what you wanted. The car will scream Right now I have a resonated dual tip on my exhaust with no muffler. It's loud as hell, even at idle, but man does it sound sweet. Very deep. I can't hear my radio when it's cranked all the way up on the highway though I think the cars actually sound better (but really loud)without a muffler than with a straight through muffler.

Oh, one more thing, most free flowing mufflers come with silencers you can put in while driving on the street and then remove when you want to let loose at the track(just a few screws usually, some clamp on). That way you can get the best of both worlds. They usually end up being more restrictive than a baffled muffler when you have the silencer in though.

man thats a freakin neat idea having a silencer.
im also looking to get a muffler for my 280 the only thig is the cops really crack dowm on young drivers and sports cars so i think ill have to wait till i have the entire car immaculate b4 putting a very loud muffler on. so just be carefull with noise cause in some places it can atttaact way too much attention and not the good kind.

In California can actually take a decible reading to hold up in court. They give you a ticket that you take to an authorized shop and they perform a decible test. If it passes, you get out of the ticket, if it fails, you gottat pay it. Two good things about this law. 1) You have a chance to modify the exhaust before you actually go get the test done. They give you so much time to do it. 2) The actual decible level is pretty high(cant remamber exact number), you'd be surprised how loud you can actually go. The only bad part is that the legal level is so high that a lot of cops will still pull you over thinking that your car is too loud, even though it's not. The pitch has a lot to do with this. Loud Honda's are more likely to get pulled over than a loud V8 even though they are putting out the same decibles just because of the type of noise. And while they got you pulled over, they can start checking out other legalities. I'm not sure if any other states have adopted this law yet though. Another thing is, is that last time I checked, you had to pay for the decible test. Alot of exhaust manufacturers are advertising decible level so you know if it's legal before you buy it. If you have documentation of that, you can use that in court too in California instead of getting the test.
