engine rebuild

I took my 82 280zx turbo engine in to a machine shop almost 2 years ago to get rebuilt. I'm paying around $2,000-2,500 for the work. I was woundering how long it took and how much other people have paid for there engine rebuild? Thanx:022:

I just finished my second rebuild on the same motor. First time was about 7 years ago... so I don't really remember all the costs, but it was about $400 for head work, $350 for .040" Nismo pistons, $800 for block, crank, rod work, and about $150 for gaskets & bearings... somewhere around there.

Second time around: Head work: $200. Same pistons, sleeved cyl 5 & 6, ARP head studs, and some other goodies: $900.

Cost is all relative to the amount of work, parts prices, and who's doing the work.

Superior Machine in Reno Nevada is doing the work. I heard that they where really good, thats why I went to them. I just can't beleive how long it is taking.

The machine shop I go to cranks out all my stuff usually within a week, sometimes two weeks if they have tons of other projects.

so it has took them 2 years to do the rebuild? id have to have a talk with them about that... have your been calling them regularly to remind their asses to get to work?

2 years!!! DAYUM!

Forget that man. You could of had a race engine by now.
Sounds like you are going WAY to nice on them.

straight hate 11-29-2008 12:54 PM

Shouldnt take two years my man. I would have to agree with Nismo, any time I have taken stuff in turn around is usally a week or two tops. I'd have been all over em' about a year and a half ago.

Ratfink 11-29-2008 01:20 PM

You're not in AZ are you? I will personally go in there and knock some sense if you need it. haha

straight hate 11-29-2008 03:02 PM

Yeah, I would been all over there s*&t about a year and a half ago. Longest turn over time I have ever had on machine work is two weeks!

SHADY280 11-29-2008 09:46 PM

i spent 6000 bux and had everything back in 2 weeks, i shoulda spent about 500 more and got some little extras done.

zordietrying 12-01-2008 04:31 PM

At first they told me it would be 4-6 months, but this is too long. thanx :s-chainsaw:

zordietrying 12-01-2008 04:38 PM

I also call and stop by in person to help push them along!

NismoPick 12-01-2008 08:00 PM

That's insane. What do they say when you ask them WTF is going on? Or have you asked? Kinda sounds like you haven't laid down the law....

I would personally be worried about them even having my stuff anymore. Have you seen your parts lately? I wouldn't be surprised if your block got sent to the scrappers a year ago.

my buddies engine is near done after a year and few months but thats cause teh machine shop owners wife was incredibly sick and didnt work at the shop or open it for several months. but even then he hasnt paid in full yet either. go in there and beat some ass thats nuts.

Holy CRAP! I've got some long term restorations going, but that's completely different than a simple freaking engine rebuild.

If you don't already have one, make a list of everything you dropped off at the shop and include descriptions of every part and it's condition if you can remember. Make it look a little "worn", like about 2 and half years old...

Then, you should show up at the shop unannounced and collect your motor and all the accessories it came with. Make sure you have a truck or SUV big enough to hold the motor and accessories. You don't want to make two trips. If you leave and have to come back, your stuff will get "lost or broken" before your return.

Ratfink 12-01-2008 10:16 PM

I don't know what I am more mad at.

The shop screwing you over, or you bending over and taking it.

Time to take some action man.

Keep us posted.

Good luck.

bmwe30 12-01-2008 10:33 PM

IF you get your motor back put it in and see if it runs PERFECTLY!
if it doesnt, go back there and raise hell

also you should invest in the tools and the know how of building your own engines, it's cheaper
you just cant do the machine part
I tell ya nothing can beat the first time I started up my rebuilt motor in my BMW, but then again it's in a junk yard because of Mr.Yukon

zordietrying 12-03-2008 06:06 PM

I was told by many people this was the best machine shop in the area, thats why I went there. I haven't been there for about a month, but i used to go there every couple of weeks and ask hows it going and how much longer. They show me what they have done and apologize for how long it is taking. Then they give me some excuses, like the owner broke his shoulder and ect....So yea,:fenforcer: its lame.

NismoPick 12-03-2008 06:26 PM

So what have they done?

Can't be a very "reputable" shop if they take two years. Seriously... you need to stand up for yourself. Go down there and say "I need my parts back RIGHT NOW" and pay for what they have done so far (but not before biotching like hell that it's taken so long, and you deserve a heavy discount).
