Electrical Help
Hi All,
Over the weekend I was cleaning up the engine bay in my 79 ZXR and I removed the Coil & AFM Brackets for some R&R. When I assembled everything back together Car fired right up, but the tach, oil pressure, gauges, are not working along with the red charge light on the battery gauge come on as well. Also extremely high idle now. I haven't had time yet to do a whole lot of trouble shooting yet, but have confirmed the following: First off I always disconnect the battery cable when working on electrical. The battery static voltage is 12.8 volts and 13.8 with the engine running This seems to be low? I'm thing it should be charging at more like 14.3 volts. Alternator is new Hitachi 60Amp. I'm thinking I may have a ground problem somewhere? or dirty connection in the fusible link box. All the glass fuses are fine. Also of not when I got the car a month ago i had to replace the fusible link for the battery as it was fried, that's when I went ahead and changed the alternator after having it tested. I will be doing additional electrical trouble shooting this week to resolve, but thought I would ask if there is anything specific I should be looking for? Thanks for the help, I appreciate it! Regards, Phil |
Maybe you forgot to put back the small ground black wire that located under the AFM bracket/Plate!!

I did remember to do that but I may not have re- assembled the bracket and grommet assembly correctly, also I painted the AFM bracket so maybe I don't have an adequate grounding surface. Thanks I will check into that! Any chance you have a picture of the proper installation of the AFM grounding strap?
Thanks, Phil |

Okay it looks like I am going to need a Ignition / Accessory Relay. I didn't realize that it was going to be so difficult to find! If anyone has one that they could part with I would appreciate it very much. The part number on the side of the relay is 25230-89958 location shown in the 79 FSM page BE-10.
I have attached a picture of the relay in question. Thanks, Phil |
