EGR Question
I was working on my friends 4-wheeler today and we noticed that whenever you rev it up above half throttle the EGR would fire exhaust gas straight into the carb. So naturally we pull that crap off in an attempt to make more horsepower. After pulling all the EGR stuff off, the 4-wheeler had a very obvious power gain.
So I start thinking, What would happen if I take all the EGR stuff off of my 280? Would this hurt my car in any way? Would it help in any way? Has anyone ever done this before? When I put my new engine in about 6 months ago I had disconnected the EGR junk to take the intake manifold off. It never even crossed my mind that I could just leave it off. If anyone has input on this I would be very interested to hear it. Thanks, -Andrew |
I put headers on my 280zx that did not have an EGR hookup. I left the valve in place and plugged the bottom intake with a huge bolt. My dad helped me back then and I dont' remember if he did any welding on it.
I've run that way ever since (6 years I think) with no problems. I didn't notice a huge power gain with the EGR or the headers. Just a little. So, that power gain might be due to the new exhaust and not the valve. I was thinking the EGR valve had something to do with cold start or warmup of the engine and keeping emissions low at that time. Maybe yours was malfunctioning anyway on the 4-wheeler. My car has passed emissions a couple times since then with no problems. Of course, the engine is alway warmed up. When looking at the top of the intake manifold, it appears the EGR is in place and working. :D Muahaha! |
From what I know, the EGR on cars is used to control emissions and to keep the engine temperature down. On the 4-wheeler they had it hooked up so that it fed the carb a mixture of clean and bad air. The object was to keep the revs and overall speed down I guess. Saftey issue maybe. But thanks for the info. I think I might try taking the exhaust to intake manifold pipe off and plugging the hole. We'll see what happens.

Let us know how it goes... this sounds interesting.

A nicely modded car that's well tuned should pass the sniffer test with little problems. The bureaucracy in collusion with the auto manufacturers actually want to force obsolescence on these cars through legislation rather than actual attrition. |
collusion, obsolescence, attrition....someone did well in english class
its always great to make such a simple statement sound so much more... must be well educated.. good job! |

Another example is my truck. A few years ago I ripped off the stock carburetor and put on a single Weber. NO emissions stuff at all. Tuned it up good and it passed great! Super clean reading on the pipe-sniffer doohicky. Now they pop the hood to see what you got going on under there.... but, my ruck is 26 years old now. uuuh, this car's VIN shows it as a non-turbo... what's this big round thing on the exhaust? Oh, that's just the injector cooling fan. |
did they seriously buy that??? youd have to be pretty retarded to think an injector cooling fan is on the exhaust....but hey...whatever floats their boat...
|
Ya, well I had an email conversation with some car dealership on the east coast that was selling a 280ZX on eBay. He said the plastic turbine by the spark plugs was a turbo.... and all 280ZX's are turbo. The X means turbo! 280Z is non-turbo.... he also said I was an idiot (and some other stuff) and I knew nothing about cars because I thought his 280ZX turbo he had advertised on eBay was not a turbo. :D
Also, it was a 1981 2+2 and in 1981 the turbos only came in 2-seater bodys. |
wow...i dont think words can ever decribe that situation.........
oh man...is that ever so horrible...i would seriously doubt if they stayed in business much longer... that is just rediculous, but whatever....its at times like that that the onyl thing you can do is sit back and laugh... keep in mind though that at one point, we were all like that at some point in time... |
He was from Oklahoma. Here's the auction.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...&category=6187 He doesn't take very good pictures either. I tried asking if it had an engine swap but he was too caught up in insulting me to answer that. |
What!! that is retarted, I wish I could have a conversation with this guy. So you say you talked to him by e-mail, I say you give us his e-mail adress and we all give em hell, that will teach him to try to screw with people.
|
I already did that on another forum back when the auction was live! hehe...
|
Did any body e-mail him cause that would have been awesome.

Heh - I used to tell ricers all the time that my Z was turbo'd ... they always buy it :D
Seriously, though ... don't you just hate people like that? I had a substitute in my auto class like that - he tried to tell me that my Volvo had an inline-6 engine, AND that it was carbureted, when in actuality it is a 2.3L, 4-cylinder, K-Jetronic fuel injected engine. Gotta love people that think auto-geekery is a fad :D |
What!!! You Mean I Bought A New "turbo" Just To Cool My Injectors!!!! ????
|
oh dont tell me you fell victim too?!?
|
Skully, its well worth it. Cold injectors add at least 50 horsepower!

I did a few tests with the EGR setup and I think I have figured out a way to set it up so that I can put it back to stock if needed. I will post pictures later. I also talked to my mechanic friend and he said that by removing the EGR I will lose fuel economy but gain a few horses. I guess I'll find out after I get this thing all set up.

keep us updated, let us know how you did it cuz im just whoopin ass left n right...been beat a few...but not by a terrible amount..except for this one that was a supercharged gto..goddamn those cars are FAST!
|
I got demolished by an modded WRX STi the other day. I actually took him off the line for about 20 feet, then his turbo spooled and he said bye-bye. Holy crap that thing was fast.
