Distributor cap..

I was told by someone at the yard that they have notoirously bad distributor caps, making your car run off and on..for instance yesturday the thing was running like garbage and today it runs like a champ. I rememberd what he told me and was wondering if I should get a new cap, he seemed pretty knowledgeable about Z's and was driving an early 300z turbo(which I've heard are beasts to keep maintained). What do you guys think?

Problem. Not consitent performance..Runs good/runs bad on daily basis.
Water in distirbutor cap?

I have never heard that, The only prob. I had with my dizzy is the stator and rotor had to large a gap in it and it would get no spark when my engine got up to temp.

Yeah same here. Seems also that my car's been running on 5 cylinders for the past 6 years ... There was lots of carbon tracking on my cap, the rotor was pretty nasty, and most of the wires were corroded, if not completely through. Also, since the gap was large enough, once the temp gauge started to move, the other 5 cylinders got intermittent spark. I tell you what, even on 5 (sometimes 3) cylinders, she still sounds pretty damn beastly. :D
Tomorrow the new cap, rotor, and wires come in. I'll let you know how she does.

Same here, hard starting, dropped cylinders from time to time, and generally gutless. Too large a gap between reluctor and stator. I replaced them with the Crane XR3000 module. Problem solved. Easy starting, hits on all six, and goes like a bat out of hell. That was over a year ago and still going strong.

Is that XR3000 thing a type of optical trigger conversion combined with a CD ignition? If so, where does the optical trigger part install?

Ok, I just put on new cap rotor and wires...and the car dosen't run now? what's up with that lol? Did I mess up putting it on..I think it's out of gas though, cause the light came on, if so I'm gonna be so ticked off. Anyone got suggjestions?

ok the I realized there is to big of a gap between strator and reluctor. How the hell do I fix this, haha. Thanks in advance...Though, it was running fine before new cap and wires.
