you can look to see if the green LED is lit. Otherwise mostly find someone with a working car and change out if they would let you.
if you would really like answers that would help you and avoid flames give the following info when you post: year of car, n/a or turbo engine, stick or slushbox, digital or analog dash. Most of us can tell by the year what model you have ie 85T is a turbo z31. Z cars come in many flavors and they are all different. example 84,85,86 Z31's pretty comparable. there were changes in 87,88,89. in addition 300ZX can refer to two completly different cars the Z31 and the Z32. No mindreaders here the more info you can post the more likely you get a cogent useful answer. The cars with L engine (straight six) changed almost yearly from their introduction. A 240Z and and a 280Z have similarities but they can also have wide variance.

why not describe what problems you have that makes you think the ecu is bad? Lot of other things go wrong on a z. Ecu not usually bad unless someone cross wired the cables while giving a jump start.

I have seen were some people tap them with a screw driver and the car runs better. This seems to be common when the car sits for years. The car was flooding badly I would have to pull the #2 fuel relay for it to run at all. I pulled the ecu plug and did all the test. The only failure was the theromotime test so I just unplugged it. I checked the fuel pressure and 30 lbs. The CHTS also tested good but I decided to pull it and check it. I cleaned it and held it in my hand and watched the resistance change. I changed the oil it seemed to have fuel in it from the flooding problem. I did tap on the computer at some point but I'm not sure why but the car is running great now Why ?

Did you test / inspect the AFM?
Running NGK spark plugs? Proper gap? Read the plugs?
Proper timing?
Checked the cold start valve for leaks?
Like Roger said, the ecu itself is rarely the problem. When the ecu is bad, it usually stops all together. People "tapping on the ecu" are actually moving the wires connected to the ecu. Maybe you read my posts about that? My 280ZX Turbo had ecu ground wire problems that I discovered by getting pissed on the freeway and kicking the ecu. But it was the wiring, not ecu.

I'm not sure the type of plugs. I did gap them and used a timing light to verify there all firing. I did the afm test from the ecu plug and that checked good. Is there another test for the afm that I missed ? Thanks for the help
