cold start

man let me start off by saying this problem is bullshit. when I crank my car when it is not warmed up, it dumps way too much fuel in. it runs like shit, so I have ben having to adjust my afm to make it run corectly. I boght a new afm, but am having no luck with it. is there somthing I am missing that is making it do this when it is cold? it is pissing me off. I just need it to quit dumping so much fuel when it is cold. I don't know what to do at this point.

EatmyDust 09-25-2006 08:08 PM

might I add when it dose run when it is cold, it dosn't run long. I have to give it gas to keep it going, then it just fluds it out, causing it to not run at all.

NismoPick 09-25-2006 08:54 PM

Have you already checked/replaced the air regulator?

RodMoyes 09-25-2006 08:58 PM

^ Yup... Beat me to it!

Replace the A R and see what happens.

Rod knows whut up.

EatmyDust 09-26-2006 04:09 AM

Ok this is going to sound stupid but I didn't know there was an air regulator on this car. where is this now?

NismoPick 09-26-2006 07:07 AM

It's on the top of the intake manifold. It a lookie a like thees:

Bleach 09-26-2006 10:19 AM

the AFM itself can affect your cold starting too. Make sure you don't put water all over the Air Flow Meter. Read Bleach's Z tip of the day in the Off Topic section. I already went over this! :D

haha

EatmyDust 09-26-2006 05:11 PM

well the new afm wont even let the car run when it is warmed up. I am runing on the old one now. I want to ask what is the purpos of the auxilary air reg? I will look it up in the chiltons, but I would like to hear you guys's perspective. I took the new afm to my budys z restor shop and he told me it is the rong afm, and that it is for a 510. now if this is true, why is the reman I have on it that is leting the car run the same one same part number, same down to the t. this reman was on the car when I boght it, so either he didn't take a good look at it, or I have the rong one on it now, but that wouldn't explain why it runs with the old one and not the new one.

EatmyDust 09-26-2006 08:49 PM

well I see that on the scamatic that the auxilary air is wired into the efi like the afm. I still don't know when it is powerd, what trigers the power up, and what it is suposed to acomplish, besides leting air past the throttle plate, without having to go through the plate. Is the auxulary air suposed to have manifold vacum to it? when I put manifold vacum to it, it idles up a good bit.

Bleach 09-27-2006 07:41 AM

well, I'm not sure how he knows it is for a 510 unless it looks physically smaller. Wait a sec... the first and second gen 510's all had carbs!
Take that Hitachi carb off your Z! :D hehe

I've swapped a couple 280ZX AFMs but never earlier ones from a 280Z so I'm not sure how well they might be swapped around. The mid 80's 200SX I believe has a AFM of the same style but for a 4-cyl. The BMWs from the 80's use the Bosch FI system with a flap AFM too... not that it'll work on your Z but they might interchange enough to make you think it'll work.

duowing 09-27-2006 02:23 PM

If you haven't fooled around with the Remanned AFM it might actually be that your car has more problems then you think and the fact that you've been messing with the other one has just compensated for the other problems. Just a theory, but that theory seemed to be right with my car...:paranoid:

EatmyDust 09-27-2006 03:51 PM

well its the right one, the only problem is that I can see with it, is that they set the spring tention way to loos. that is why it floods out.

Using the BMW AFM in the 80's was a very common cheat in SCCA club racing. You got much better flow out of the BMW from it's greater flow rates and it looks exactly the same on the outside as the stock AFM on the ZX.

naviathan 09-28-2006 01:21 PM

Since this hasn't been mentioned, Check your head temperature sensor. It's between cylinders 5 and 6 on the passengers side of the block. When it's disconnected or not functioning it will make the car run really rich.

Lizik muh-bizalls! :)

Turbo swap will happen someday, just not someday soon.

I will have my all black 96 Z32TT before I do a turbo swap on the S130.

~1983-91 BMW 325i
It is a 2.5L straight six

If you find one in a yard, see if the FI clips are the same type but a better connection. Grab other stuff. :) then set the car on fire when you have what you want.

:wasted: muh.... muh.... sweet bimmers... Bah! I hate pre-92 3's anyway :D

Bleach 09-29-2006 11:47 AM

Its like an overweight Datsun 510. ya, I had one. 1989 four door. ok car, but rediculous on parts prices and no, I didn't see them being more reliable than every other car on the road. BMW owners keep ranting on that. My Nissans have been by far the most reliable. I liked my Altima better than the Bimmer.

GTR 09-29-2006 01:48 PM

Hijacking threads again, guys? I'm just curious, eatmydust, how many pins does the "new" AFM have? Better yet, I think you outta bring it down to Corpus and let me fix it for you ^.^

RodMoyes 09-29-2006 03:06 PM

^ I went to Disneyland once.

Rod.

jfairladyz 09-29-2006 04:06 PM

I wanna go to Disney World. But the price is rediculous :D (what was the topic here again??? Thread jacking?)

And the only reason I'm not contributing to this post in a meaningful way is because Nismopic and Rod already gave the solution to the problem ;)

RodMoyes 09-29-2006 04:35 PM

Grapes taste good.
