Exclamation A/C Compressor Clutch Removal?

Hi folks,

I have a 1983 280zx that's been retrofitted to run 134A coolant. Well the clutch went out on my compresor, it was a minor fault that should be easy to repair.

The AC is currently stuck on the 'on' position; the clutch is fully engaged, so the AC is always running, no matter what and I'd like to fix that stuck clutch
So I removed the bolt holding the front of the clutch together and I noticed that the threading stick out, instead of receeding inwards like a bolt into the clutch wheel.

How do I remove this clutch? I don't want to remove the entire clutch, just the front piece so that I can repair it. Any tips that don't require special sets or toolkits would be awesome.

Not sure what parts you are referring to. Sec HA of your FSM has a load of diagrams and troubleshooting exercises. Can you direct us using the diagrams, maybe HA-34, HA-35? Thanks.

It's on page HA34 of the 1983 280zx FSM
Model MJ-167

If you look at it, the compressor has a screw sticking out of it instead of being recessed.

I'm reading up on the manual now for more information but I need to pop that front clutch off and rebuild it.

On page HA35 there's a shaft nut (Number 1 on the diagram), that I removed with a wrench. Now what?
I see that there is another nut, the hub nut (Number 2 on the diagram)

How do I get that front piece off? just the front portion of the clutch, not all of it.

OK, reading diag HA-35, it looks to me that the compressor shaft (16) is the only backbone here, holding the whole compressor together. On the left is shaft nut (1) and hub nut (2). Looks to me like you remove those two - and the clutch hub (3) would slide/pop/shimmy/ease itself/be more agreeable to the idea of coming off the end of the compressor shaft. Clear from that diag that you can't remove clutch hub without removing hub nut (2).

If clutch hub does not let go, I would suspect that there are 'lock' fittings that were meant to keep it from moving/rattling around during use. If you look at the section on HA-35, the pointy gadget (no number) through the lower face of the clutch hub - and that thing called "key" (4) are suspicious. One or both of them will set the clutch hub free. (Since the clutch hub was not born in its current position, it was put there at the factory. If you reverse the installation procedure, you free the clutch hub. You need only have faith, my son!)

Awesome! Well I'll go ahead and give it a shot right now, I'm in my shop so I'll update accordingly to my findings.

Well, the diagram is slightly different from what I see. I don't see a standard nut, either metric or SAE, instead I see this round bit with two holes in it, so I'm guessing I'm going to need a special tool to fit into those two holes and wrench it out?

Yeah, HA-35 has several references to special wrenches and sockets. KV99412302 and KV99412305, KV99412306. Have you searched to find them - or substitutes? Maybe one of our 280 pros can help.
