another stroker question

Through the 6 pages of searching all I've really read about was people wanting to stroke out there n/a engine to 3.1 and sometimes turbo it, but what about stroking the turbo engine (L28ET) to 3.1? Will the MSA (thezstore.com) kit even work with the turbo engine?

NismoPick Dec 2, 2006 06:59 PM

All the L28 blocks have the same bore... hence the reason they are all called L28. Later L28 & all L28ET blocks are F54 (the better of all the L28 blocks). If you are building a turbo stroker... use a turbo (F54) block. If you are building an n/a stroker... you can use the engine you have, or if you don't have the F54... you can get one. :D

I have an 82 280zx Turbo, so yes i have F54, so then yes the kit will work, right?

xtreme 2 Dec 2, 2006 07:06 PM

yea, we have the l28et motor... just wondering if the stroker is a healthy upgrade for the motor considering the fact that there is a turbo bolted to the motor...

also, with a stock motor, what is the estimated upgrade that a stroker kit will yield?

NismoPick Dec 2, 2006 07:40 PM

It's been discussed many times just recently, that a 3.1 stroker kit isn't the best way to get power out of an L28ET. If you are building an n/a then it is a good way to go.

SHADY280 Dec 2, 2006 07:54 PM

the stroker with a turbo doesnt allow for enough rpm to spool the turbo super high like a stock bore size would. the n/a relies on torque and not as much rpm, so ive seen and read. the strokers just dont rev as quick and high as stock bore, or close to stock bore. you can get very nice hp out of the stock bore turbo motor

KTM200-280zxt Dec 2, 2006 08:10 PM

First off there is no need to go with the MSA kit. Much cheaper just to source some 240Z rods and a LD28 crank. Either way on a turbocharged car with the money spent on a stroker it could go towards much better things. Such as a larger turbo, etc.. A lot more performance for the money. I was also thinking about it but unless you really have the money to spend I wouldnt suggest it.

I believe I'm the only person currently on this board with a 280ZX 3.1L turbo and my opinion is, it's not worth it.

You can get nearly the same performance for a LOT less money by simply doing 'traditional' turbo upgrades.

Of course, mine still has carbs, so I'm not realy doing it purely for performance either...

It's carb'd? You have any pics of that engine?

ok, thanks guys, i'll spend my money on other upgrades first then worry about stroking it at a much later time if i deem it nessicary

FubarI33t Dec 3, 2006 10:05 AM

I have done my homework on the Stroker engine's. My 2 cents, Don't do it to a Turbo'ed engine. not worth it. and it's Almost not worth it on a N/A. The only reasion why most ppl Stroke out a N/A is to be uniqe. and the Sound of a 3.1S is much diff then a stock N/A. You can push good ###'s with just a turbo. Or if N/A. as nice P90 head shaved .80 and a good Cam. She can be very tourqy then. All in All. Only storke if you have spare time. and spare money to spend on such a project.

Gotcha, i'll invest my money into some more turbo upgrades, head work, and an LSD before i even think about stroking it

FubarI33t Dec 3, 2006 10:24 AM

In a way. your kind of turning this car engine into a truck engine with the longer stroke.

D_Zed Dec 3, 2006 11:10 AM

I wanna get a 71 240z, L28DET, and twin turbo it. Then paint the car midnight blue!

:075: That is all.

l28Det??? huh??? DET???? huh????
and LWW... you got a turbo carb setup? is that what i got out of that post? if so... how does that set up work i always wondered and what not... its ridic.

snwbrderphat540 Dec 3, 2006 02:53 PM

He has a Cartech setup. Pretty old school, but I imagine it still kicks ass.

I think he might be talking about the DevilZ? I think that might have had some kind of twin cam setup... But im probably wrong, and hes probably just odd.

FubarI33t Dec 3, 2006 05:19 PM

Nismo. You have to be freakin kidding me. Where did you find that? I Have been tryign to find a custom intake fo so long. Even if it means i go Carb. i want custom Badly. Please tell me where to get them.

Are you talking about my Cartech plenum and intake?

They don't make them anymore. Both those pics are from my website or my Gallery page. Any particular reason why would you want to do this?

It would take all of a couple of hours to fab up a nasty one with my MIG, especially if it didn't have any decreasing angles. Cut 4 plates the length of the head and 3.5" wide, cut 2 end plates 3.5"x3.5", weld them all together and then weld a 3" flange on one end for the TB. Use an original intake manifold to get the intake runner spacing correct. Cut 1.5" holes and weld on 6 equal length round runners. Add 3/8" thick flanges for the head bolts, or just shim it so the exhaust manifold/header bolts are flush.

See how easy that is to type... ;)

FubarI33t Dec 3, 2006 06:01 PM

Well. My car is just for show. I am building up a 76 with a F54/P90 Turbo. And i think it just looks Awsome.

SHADY280 Dec 3, 2006 06:10 PM

im gonna build a custom one just like lww said, already looking into the materials, we got a miller suitcase TIG at work, so i can take it home. hey l-dub, why 1.5" runners, i wanna try to fing the right size material, i heard that if those are to big, it will screw up the flow, and actually decrease hp, kind like headers can do

veyenyl Dec 3, 2006 07:19 PM

Here you go DIYers
http://www.rossmachineracing.com/intakeparts.html

I think theres another place that sells tapered runners. Can't find the link though.
