air intake from body???

now im just wondering why the hell they put the intake openings on the inside of the body right behind the headlights?? is there a difference between having thos takin out or leaving them on?

i ripped them bastards off and just have it suck the air in straight to the air filter...

i imagine i am getting much better airflow, but is there any way i can take off that ungodly blue thing and replace it with a K&N filter setup or would it take some modification?

i was wondering how else i should go about removing the AFM and what steps i would need to take, what i should not do, and what parts i would need to buy...

The K&N is a direct fit and looks nice. As for the AFM you can get a Turbo one and gut it then put your stock parts in. I have also heard that the 240SX Throttle body will fit.

To get rid of any AFM you will need a different fuel injection computer that reads intake manifold vaccume/boost to adjust fuel flow. Megasquirt is one of those kinds of computers.

cool, at least i have an idea of what needs to be done/bought...but i still have one question...

why did they put the intake input behind the headlights rather than from an outside source? (i ripped that **** off and just have the blue thing...i seem to get better airflow)

The air intake should actually be in an oval light blue housing mounted in front of the radiator. This is then plumbed through a hole on the drivers side of the radiator support into the AFM to the TB which is mounted to the intake manifold.

If yours was modified from stock, then it may look different. Do you have any photos of the engine bay? Preferably from the drivers side and in front of the radiator?

This will help us understand the question a little better.

its the stock light blue air intake...just the way it was designed..it was made to pull air in from behind the headlights..im just trying to figure out why this is so.....almost everything on my car is stock except for the stuff ive been able to replace bit by bit ie injectors, hoses etc...

I understand what you are saying. If you look at almost any car the intake is in some rediculous location like behind the headlight. Im pretty sure they put it there in an attempt to extend the life of air filters, just a guess. Also, on some cars, if the air coming into the engine is too cold (ex: cold air intake in cold weather) then it can cause the car to run like crap. This is because the car thinks that it isnt getting warmed up when it really is and causes it to run rich. This happened on my friends Z31.

Hahahaha!! You're absolutely right!

I took that damn extension off so long ago, I completely forgot it was ever there! Back when I was still running the stock airbox with K&N filter element, I also cut out a large opening on the back of the airbox to reduce restriction even more.

now what i want to know is...if it is to prevent pulling cold air in durning cold weather...regardless this makes absolutely no sense at all with the turbo models!!!! when the air is boosted by the turbo, the air is heated up hence why an intercooler would be needed if you were to ever upgrade to higher boosts/twin turbos....absolutely moronic in my opinion..the only reason i can see they didnt create a different design is to cut on production cost for creatin a second model production line rather just stick a turbo setup in the car instead of NA...

at one point i completely ripped off the whole air assembly but then it rained...Oh god i dont want to think about how bad that was...needless to say i put it back on within an hour of removing it.
i squirted some feul injected intake cleaner to remove any deposit if any formed and completely cleaned off my j-pipe, the afm, the turbo intake outlet and the throttle body...ill never make that mistake in a lifetime...that was about a year or so ago....back when i was just a newbie at cars...lesson learned i will iterate...

I just did it for $35 bucks and an afternoon of my time take a look

https://www.zdriver.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11321

I FEEL A BIG DIFF WHEN I REV THE MOTOR UP I CAN ALSO HEAR IT STUCK MORE AIR

to hell with K@N or motor sports filters you can do it alot cheaper if you you build it your self

i could see how that setup works..i wouldnt need as many parts, mine is an 81 turbo and the afm is connect at the wall to the left of the radiator(looking towards the front) so i would just need a 90* hose and possibly a pipe and filter setup....until i get paid friday, it will be fine...the cool air blast my intake and i pull the air in as it comes so i guess it all works out, but my car is working quite nicely as it stands....

From what I can find about the way the air is plummed.......It was done that way to prevent any water from comming into the intake during heavy rains/high water situations. I just removed the cowl from the airbox, put in a K&N and the difference is stupid! Since the intake is already "cold air' (pulling in outside air before the motor has a chance to heat it up) I've found no big gain (except for the "cool" factor) to replace the stock airbox with a custom intake... unless you're going for the 240sx swap.

there is a difference as the air box only has the 2 openings vs the K&N or custom that pulls it in all around+the top so you will get more air(mostly for setups with larger turbos, twin turbos or high boost)

I really don't think there is any advantage gained from putting on an aftermarket intake. I put one on and didn't notice a difference at all. It does look a lot cleaner though, The big blue box just looked stupid.

One easy thing that you can do to improve performance is put on a new fuel filter. Im not sure how old my fuel filter was but when I put a new one in I noticed that it had a much smoother idle and seemed to accelerate slightly fast.

I also just replaced my fuel filter and i felt a big change in how the car pulls more during acceleration ..........I do here a bit of a diff in the sound that the intake makes when reving the car. It sounds like its takeing a big gulp of air.Ican only here it when the hood is up and iam standing at the motor reving off the manifold. i think that has to do with the stock air flow sinecer
IF you change it to an r32 will there be a big diff

so i changed my fuel filter today...and i swear i was getting 0-60 in about 8 s but then i would start flying...but after, i swear by all means i shaved off 3 seconds count from 0-60...
(seconds=counting to 8), i dont have exact measures...but from counting to 8 to counting to 5....i dont even wanna Know how bad that filter had to have been...i must say that for a 12$ investment....i got great results....

raced some acura rsx-r today that wasnt a ricer but actually was smart with his car, good exhaust..nice vroom.....me n him raced down this drag of road, and it was a fair match, but i beat him... i guess nissan is just the best in all respects...yeah they can have their toyotas and hondas...but nissan always manages to come out on top...

stock intake??

the stock intake does suck, but just buy a 3"inch,90 degree, pipe and cone, so the the cone sits in front of the radiator,*more air flow there. and it only cost me 10$$ just for the pipe. plus it looks alot better than the blue stock pan thingy
