Try and contact this guy, he supposedly got 415-450HP out of his 280ZX:

Man, that sure is painful having to do all of that for 400hp.

Is there a rating on the rods/pistons/etc for power? The more I read, the more it sounds like the head is a serious 'roadblock' to gaining the full potential from the motor.

The smaller the engine, the more effort it takes to put out the power. Plus the air flow is going through one valve. With newer engines, they sometimes have DOHC so you have two valves for your intake and your exhaust. 280-300hp is a more achievable number for the L28 turbo.

I thought of that after I wrote it. My old laser had a dual cam 4 valve/cylinder head and I was getting 350hp without doing anything to the head nor the internals

Check out SleeperZ's recent dyno results on his setup using stock block and head and a few easy mods like intercooler, fuel pump, injectors, 60mm throttle body, 300ZX computer and MAF.
