280 zxt 1982 timing

I read that you should unplug your TPS then set your timing to 20 degs, then plug back in your TPS.

When I do this, I plug back in the TPS it, automatically drops the Timing to 10 deg.

When I give it just a little gas, and the TPS comes of the idle position, the timing goes to 20 Deg.
Is this correct. It dosent say in the FSM. It just says the ecu sets the timing. Im trying to set the base.

So I guess the question is unplug TPS to set to 20 or not to unplug TPS. I have read alot of posts and
none cover this question.
Stock 1982 turbo 5 speed.
Thanks
